Favorite Insert Set - New article
Hey all,
With all the talk about base cards being boring it gave me the idea to write and article about inserts sets. What makes them so good, which ones people prefer and why. To help with my research, I would be grateful if you could tell me what is your favorite insert set (can be standard insert. gu insert, auto insert etc..) and why. It doesnt have to be a recent year either it can be older...
For instance, if I was to pick my favorite insert set, it would more than likely be the 96-97 Donruss "Les Gardiens" because it features french canadian goalies and is heavily linked to my collecting interest as well as having a brilliant design with the "Fleur de Lys" in the background. (Yes it's an hockey set but thats the only sport i collect lol)
If you have a picture to illustrate your point, it's even better!
Thanks in advance for your help!

01-02 UD Legends BKB Fiorentino Collection Autograph Parallel
Example:

Why?
An absolutely gorgeous set. On the card autographs of 10 of the Legends of the Game. They are the parallel to the regular autograph set and are limited to their jersey numbers. I.E. The Gervin above is limited to 44. The Oscar Robertson that I want is limited to 1. The portraits painted to be used just give a classy feel to the card. They are extremely rare to find but worth it if you can acquire one.

i would say the best insert set has to be the 97-98 EX-2001 Jambalaya, when this set first debuted......nothing was anything like it at the time and they were pretty hard to get 1:720 packs so they made great chase cards....i think i was in the 6th grade when these came out so i could only dream of getting one of these, especially the jordan which to this day still books 700

The best memorobilia set to every be produced was the 96-97 skybox autographics set.......this set triggered a revolution of our beloved hobby and turned it into what we know it as today.....it offered the first few certified autos from players like Mike Finley, Jerry Stackhouse, KG, Steve Nash, Stephon Marbury, Hakeem, and many others......and my favorite, the Scottie Pippen blue auto which i actually witnesses get pulled by one of my 6th grade classmates out of a 96-97 ex2000 pack

One of my favorites is 1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium, which was the first die-cut plastic set. This set has many other things going for it as well, such as excellent player selection, a slick look, and it was pretty rare for its day. These cards even kept up with serial numbered cards, which were a new innovation and very desirable when they were released. Even today they often sell for near or above their book value. I've been trying to collect the set ever since they came out and today I have 17 of the 20.

I remember the original 92 Beam Team set creating a buzz that I haven't seen matched. Go look back at the Becketts from 92 through 96. They often wrote reviews for the coming year's products, and referenced the Beam Team set. Out of the other insert sets through the 90s, only the Finest Refractors and Skybox Autographics really measured up in terms of popularity with collectors in my opinion. You could make a case for the Credentials and Jambalaya sets also, but that Beam Team set really seemed to take the insert craze to another level. My $.02.

Karine, I totally forgot about this, so sorry!
If you're still needing opinions here are mine... well i guess i'll share my favorites anyway just to share.
One of my favorites is the 1996-97 Upper Deck Rookie Exclusives insert set because it has a basketball texture. I just think the design of the set is nice and also it was a good rookie class that year. here's one on ebay to see an example -- http://cgi.ebay.com/Stephon-Marbury-...207157005r9786
I had some others in mind but now i can't remember. I will post here if i think of them!

I like those Rookie Exclusives too, especially with the rookie class that year. Great combo.
