The username you signed up with (the email account you used) is your PayPal ID. So when you sell something, you give the person your PayPal ID. If you have multiple email accounts, be sure it's the one you signed up with and make sure you spell it exactly right. When they send the money, you'll get an email from PayPal saying it was received and that's all you have to do. If it's an instant payment, the money is there for you to use. If it's an eCheck, it will take 4-5 business days to clear and you won't be able to use it until then...but that's it, pretty simple.
One warning about PayPal, people are big on trying to phish your account via email. So if you get any email from "PayPal," don't click on any links in there. A lot of times you'll get emails saying there's an issue with your account that you need to attend to and give you a link, but the link isn't really to PayPal. If you want to check to see if there are actually any issues, just go to the site manually and log in. If something really is wrong, it will tell you.

PayPal does have a claims process if the person is not happy with the purchase. If they pay and you don't ship, don't send the right thing, send damaged goods, etc, they can file a claim. The PayPal claims dept then investigates and if the buyer is found to be correct in his claim, they will award them the money back.
But they can't just take their money back whenever they want to. Once they send it, it's yours and the only way they can get it back is through the claims process, which PayPal controls.
