I bought 3 boxes of 1992 bowman baseball a few years ago out of a case at a card show for the sake of holding onto them. I still got them, and with the list of great players and future HOF's from that year, I thought it was a great investment.

That doesn't make much sense and is quite a jump to a conclusion. If he were to sell it in the future, wouldn't he want a box in which the odds were high of pulling an insert, so he could advertise the fact and produce more money?
Anyway, like others said, I also would suggest going after a product with lots of rookies from a year with a strong rookie class.
Personally, I would wait until you find a product from the current year, that looks like it contains promising rookies. I wouldn't try to go back and buy products from previous years. If they contain rookie cards of players who have made a name for themselves already, their prices have likely already increased, and probably more likely to go down and up any further.
