Great question. I would probably take the cards for $5 unless I knew there was more to the story (like she was in desperate need of money).
I had a similar situation with a different type of collectible when I found a box of Playboys under a table at a garage sale. There was 88 magazines from 1962 to 1969 all in great condition (no missing/detatched covers or centerfolds and some full years) for $25. I didn't feel guilty buying them even though as a collector I knew they were worth at least 10 times as much. I'm sure the woman who was selling them just wanted to get rid of them, as she probably didn't have the room for them, and just didn't have any interest in them.

I'd have to give her the $5 and say at least "Thank you". But I did run into something like that with a guy I worked with. His wife's mom had a bunch of cards, from who knows where, and gave them to his wife's sister. She was in town and was thinking of selling them but had know i dea what they were worth.

Well he brought them to work and asked if I could give him an idea of the value. Sure but I told him he would have to leave them with me because it would take a while. He calls his wife to say that I would but I needed over night. Crap I thought she was going have a heart attack. I had to get on the phone and convince her that I would not take any or damage them in any way shape or form.

Needless to say it was a good collection. Not very big but nice. It's been a while but I remember a few: Jim Brown 2nd yr card, Johnny Bench RC, a few Johnny Unitas', a couple Willie Mays' and quite a bit around the 1960's. But that is one of those situations where I would have to tell the truth of value and what they could get. He was a friend and co-worker and didn't want to lose that trust. But man I wanted that Johhny Bench and Jim Brown!!!!
