    Walking in from the cold...

Hey guys and gals. My name is Marcus and I've recently started to rip wax.

It all started innocently enough- I was feeling nostalgic about my childhood hobby of collecting hockey cards (early to mid nineties- so the cards are virtually worthless). So I'm on a bus on Christmas Eve on my way home to see my parents and the bus stops at an Irving in New Brunswick. I buy a pop and a protein bar and notice they've got UD Series 1 and OPC at the counter. So I pull two Series 1 packs out of the display and throw them in with my food. I get on the bus and rip them open. A Lidstrom Captains Calling insert! And some random young gun card! Cool- I'm pretty impressed with the way these cards look and after flipping the packs over and reading the odds I'm impressed that I pulled an insert and a YG out of only two packs.

You can guess what happened next... After coming home from Christmas and I bought a blaster of UD series 1 at Toys R Us. I pull a few more inserts and rookies. Time to do some googling... Of course at this point I learned that hobby packs are superior to the retails packs, but I'm still happy with the idea of set building and insert chasing over forking over cash for the uber-premium 2-cards-per-box deals.

What happened next? I bid on an auction for a Clearcut Winners Gordie Howe card and won it for ~$15. I did this based on the #/100 thing (my first encounter with low number cards) and the fact that it's Mr. Hockey. Cruising eBay gave me a chance to spend about $300 on singles :S. I picked up a few really cool cards during my eBay spending spree:

-> 08-09 Treasured Swatches Lanny McDonald (great patch on the card- 3 colours and 2 different types of stitching visible) 5/10
->07-08 OPC Premier Original Six Signatures Red Kelly (beautiful hand signed card with a fantastic example of his signature) 7/100
    ->08-09 Lecavalier/St. Louis Clearcut Duos 5/25 for only $20
->08-09 High Gloss Milan Michalek 3/10
->08-09 High Gloss Nicklas Lidstrom 1/10
->08-09 High Gloss Ilya Bryzgalov 9/10
->08-09 High Gloss Derek Roy 4/10
->08-09 High Gloss Riley Cote 2/10 (fun fighter to watch!)
->08-09 High Gloss Nathan Horton 7/10
->08-09 Clearcut Winners Howe, Luongo, Lecavalier, Gaborik and Thornton

Nothing that would knock the socks off of anyone here, but I really like the idea of picking up the high gloss, exclusives and Clearcut cards. I'd like to do a master set for UD Series 1 Hockey 08-09 if it's possible to do so without spending more than it's worth.

So yeah... Now I've got it in my head that I want to collect all the high gloss Red Wings cards from Series 1, all the Clearcut Winners and most of the Clearcut Duos. My saving grace is that I grew up with a brother that played with Sidney Crosby most of his life and I'm not terribly enamoured with the kid (unlike 90% of the card word). Plus I'm a die-hard hockey fan and I know the truth about Crosby's long term chances of being the next Gretzky. :p

I've also got a fantasy about completing the base set for UD Series 1 using exclusive #/100 cards. I've picked up about a dozen of those on the Bay and about 4 high gloss cards of players I think have significant mid-to-long term upside (eg. Nathan Horton -give him a few years on another team and he'll be a star player).

Feel free to dissuade me of my misguided ideas :)

Welcome to SCF! I dont know much about hockey cards, but the -> 08-09 Treasured Swatches Lanny McDonald (great patch on the card- 3 colours and 2 different types of stitching visible) 5/10 sounds nice. I would love to see what it looks like.

Looking for Kobe Bryant, Lakers, Blake Griffin, Swaggy P!
