While I think it's nice to keep things short and to the point, don't you think that's a pretty generic message? I mean, you are very successful in your attempts, but at the same time, I think if you add some personality to the letter, it might help? Nothing to you specifically Mike, just something I always think of when I do my letters/e-mails.

I have my signature in my e-mails set to my letter. Then when i find someone that i want to send me an autograph. I write about their career and tell them why i appreciate them. It works and they love to hear that they have fans.

My general rule is that I should have at least two paragraphs when writting a request. The first paragraph is specific about the person I am writting to. The second paragraph is asking for the autograph.

    Mr. Smith,
Hello, Sir! I am a huge fan of the Reds and of yours. I was lucky enough to see you play for the Dayton Dragons a few years ago when you and the team was in Ft Wayne. You actually hit a long double off the wall in that game. It does not surprise me at all that you are already to challenge for a spot on the Reds this season. I hope that you have a great Spring Training and know that you are going to do wonderful things for the Reds.
Mr. Smith, would you please autograph andf mail back the cards I sent you? I know that you must get a load of request and I'll understand, if you can not. I would be thrilled, if you did have the time to sign for a fan like me. Thank you either way for your time and know I'll be rooting for you.
    God Bless,
    your name
