And are the ones who keep them in the hobby so to speak? Why wouldnt they take the time to autograph the items? i know the whole lame thing of i dont want to see my sigature on the bay but dont they think people sold their stuff before the bay was around? just my little rant

There are many different reasons why certain guys don't sign. They do have lives after they retire. Many begin second careers after they play to keep food on their table. Try juggling a family, a job, and all of life's obligations while dealing with an influx of fan mail. Many players do sign, there are thousands upon thousands that do. Don't let a few who don't sign ruin your zeal for the hobby. As for players owing you something, they don't. You pay to enjoy a game, the players salaries are derived from the admission and related sales. You pay for an afternoon of fun and the game. You don't deserve an autograph. Many teams make their players accessible through fan appreciation days and other similar events.
Ask yourself if you would routinely sign items, thousands of them, when you have life to live. Don't take this personally, I am trying to answer your question.

Watch the success boards also...sometimes guys won't sign for a few months and then all of the sudden they are signing again. I sent out a bunch of stuff around the holidays that didn't get signed. I've seen some successes since then so I resent to some of these players and got my stuff back signed in a week or so. It's crazy how it works out...

You also have to account for a wife or girlfriend picking up the mail one day and putting the letter somewhere else. Then, take into account weather, yes weather. Wet weather ruins the contents of an envelope very easily, a drop by the mailman, or even a whoops, forgot to deliver it further reduce your chances of getting something signed. It wasn't long ago that a huge stockpile of mail was found where the postal workers just didn't deliver it. I think there is a link somewhere on here.
There are so many factors. The weather one hit me recently. Jeff Graham RTS'd me not long ago. The envelope was soaked all the way though and the cards inside were ruined. Looks like it got flooded or dropped in a puddle. It happens.
A few years back Don Carmen found a big box of fan mail and sent it out after finding it after a move. He paid the difference in postage and everything. Some guys got their success after 4 plus years. Don't let this whole thing get you down, just find another way around.
