I openly root for most any underdog or rookie driver that doesn't have the equipment or money to throw at high dollar technology. I also tend to root for a driver that may or may not cause some controversy such as Kyle Busch or Montoya (the wife can't stand him), or any Toyota driver when Toyota first joined the Truck series or the Cup series. I like to see first time winners, I like to see the old guys win one after a long drought, and I'd love to see a ringer take a road course win. I don't care for dominance in any sport and tend to lean towards going against a guy I might have once rooted for once they are too popular (Carl Edwards). So my list is as follows:

Nicest drivers I have met have been:

Jeff Gordon--Got to meet Jeff and shake his hand and wish him luck just before he climbed in the car to win Championship #2 in "97"

Richard Petty--Talked with about 10-12 fans for about 15 minutes while he signded autos.

Dale Earnhardt Sr....Sat at the entrance of pit road each time he went out to practice for about 3-5 minutes to give photo ops, and took my card to sign as he went into the garage area and sent someone back with it.

Bill Elliott--Awesome Bill Is an Awesome Nice Guy, but don't ask him to hand over Chase to give an auto, he just looked at the lady like "Yeah Right!!"

Kyle Petty--Pretty nice Guy in person, On TV he kinda talks like he's your kindergarden teacher, but not in person.

1997 in the pits at Atlanta 2 hrs before the race, as if he had more important stuff to do then sign 3 autographs for kids. Nobody else was asking.

Coolest Nascar Star I have ever met though was Smokey Unich, (May He Rest In Peace) This Guy actually asked for MY AUTOGRAPH, He had a Little Mickey Mouse Board and you had to sign it to get him to give an auto.
