Opinions From Parallel Set Builders

I have a question for you set builders. Many of the parallel sets being released come in multiples of /100, /50, /25, /10, /5, and /1. Lets say you're shooting for the /100 or /50 complete set, but a deal presents itself with one of the more rare versions. Do you pull the trigger on it, or are you more of a purist regarding the set? The reason I ask is I'm in that situation now. I've decided to start the 07 Chronology canvas autograph set, and I've seen some good prices on the /10 versions. I'll probably just stick to the /99 set since I'm planning on building a wall display for the set after completion (years down the road at the current prices ). Would like to get some different opinions from other collectors.

Only if you could get a good price on it, which I doubt you could. The problem with deciding to become a set builder is that you're not satisfied until you've completed the set, and with things of such a low print run, that's virtually impossible.

Thanks Mike. I did not word my question correctly. I meant to say that I am building the Chronology /99 set. Along the way, I've seen some of the /10 versions. Would it be considered sloppy (for lack of a better term) to add a /10 card to the /99 set?

Personally I think it is. When I get the lower parallels, I want to collect it also. I started out just wanting the bowman refractors and have gone to xfractors and blue refractors. Things need to look the same, because I have the obsession about it.

Stick to the /99. I tried doing that before by accepting lower numbered versions and it messed up my game plan.

I agree with gatorboymike. Building a low #ed set will drive you batty! Doing a set below, say #ed/199, would be a great accomplishment but would be really tough to do. Unless, you are doing a insert or auto set that only has 20, 40-50 cards that make up that set.

I have a few sets that I have been trying to finish since the early 2000's. Everytime I see these cards I need on my wantlist it makes me want to cry because I know I probably will not finish it.

The rarest parallel set I ever completed was 1993-94 Stadium Club First Day Issue, print run 1,000. It took me 14 years to do it. Of course, I racked up the majority of them before the advent of widespread Internet access, and that set is 360 cards large. Yeah, I thought about that. I went to the UD website last night and looked at the checklist. They distinguish between the /99 and /10 (gold) sets. So I'll continue on with the original plan. It will be a challenge, but not too difficult. Got outbid on the Lebron last night, sold at $156. There are plenty more on there, though. Thanks for the opinions.

Set: "A group of things of the same kind that belong together" If you throw one or two /10 in there people may not know it, but you will. I know if you're like me deep down it would bother you. Be patient and when you finally do complete the set the accomplishment will that much more rewarding!!! Good Luck!!!
