Is talking to Taliban the right approach?
Is talking to Taliban the right approach?
President Obama says the United States could be open to reaching out to some moderates in the Taliban in a manner similar to successful efforts with Sunni militants in Iraq.
But two analysts Monday expressed separate cautions about such an effort.
Asked if the United States is winning the war in Afghanistan, Obama said "no."
Given that remark, Gary Berntsen, a former CIA officer who led CIA forces in Afghanistan after 9/11, said Monday that it could be difficult to get members of the Taliban to work with the United States.
"If you keep saying the Taliban are winning, what incentive is there now for individuals who are fighting against us to come over to us?" he said on CNN's "American Morning."

Who are you going to talk to? They don't really have a centralized command over there. The Taliban is a loose term and most of those guys aren't even Taliban members they are just labeled with that.
He really should leave this sort of thing to the guys who know what they are doing.

Talk to Taliban? That's silly. About the equivalant to wanting to talk to Osama bin Laden, if he's still alive.

but really, no one knows what they are doing. They have it in their head that there is a way to stop terrorism completely, but flat out there is no possible way that terrorism will ever be eliminated. They can try their best but there will always be people driving a car bomb killing a couple dozen people, there will always be assassination attempts on public officials in the country attempting to change the plan. Crazy will always be around

That's true, but you can still greatly reduce one specific group's influence and ability to operate.

It may be the right way. You know, talk it out, before getting to violence. But its not a way thats going to work. These terrorists have it in there head that we are the enemy, and they are willing to die for that. So talking to them wont work. Mainly because they've been told we are just brainwashing them, so they'll never believe what ever we are trying to talk to them about.
What would we even say? "Hey, please stop doing this. Because it's really starting to suck"
