08/09 Topps Chrome? Is it worth busting?

Well I have the opportunity to bust some of this stuff. Just curious what you B-Ball guys think of it.

Is it worth busting? ALSO, who are the big Rooks to look for anyway?

Any comments/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance, Mike

It's solid, but doesn't have the hit potential of a lot of other products. It's still good if you enjoy set building, refractors, and the usual tendencies of Chrome, though. I reviewed it over on Trader Retreat:

The rookies to look for in this class are Derrick Rose, O.J. Mayo, Russell Westbrook, Michael Beasley, Brook Lopez, and Kevin Love.

its a fun break i think if you have the money to spend, the group A hits though are only 1 per case though and all the good players are "A"

Topps Chrome is a really fun product to bust. I heard the production was cut from last years, so it may have decent long term value. The chance of a big hit is low, but it does include a lot of interesting parallels, so you don't have to rely on the auto for the big hit like similarly priced upper deck products.

Thanks to all for the replies. After viewing recent sells and input from you guys as well as others, I believe I am going to pass on this product ...... for now anyway.

    Thanks again, Mike

If you are strictly looking for sale value, then I think you made a good decision, though I don't think there is a product out there "worth" breaking. Sometimes you can catch a good deal before a price shift, but it is still the smart move to sell the unopened product.

I remember a year after 2003 bowman's best for baseball hit the shelfs, it dropped to about $80-$90 a box. Nobody was buying, and they were even inserted in those assorted $9.99 boxes. Now the product is worth over $500 a box. If somebody bought a box at the low, and decided to break it now, they are assuming to get at least $500 in sale value in return, because that is now the market for the box. The majority of boxes won't come close to this price.

Best box I ever busted was 2008-09 Topps Chrome. I got all of the top rookies, a 1/1 Magic Johnson Autograph SUPERFRACTOR, and a Kevin Love Youthquake Autograph. Topps Chrome always has a good hobby value plus you get a fair amount of cool parallels.

^ Wow, that's a heck of a box! The one I got had a Douglas-Roberts RC auto and Al Thornton Red Refractor #/5 as the hits, and I thought that was pretty decent.

It was a heck of a box but dont get me wrong I busted like 4 boxes that day. My other hits were Jason Thompson Auto, Javale McGee Auto, Robin Lopez Youthquake Auto. All questionable at best, maybe the best bet is quantity?
