I've been using Fruity Loops since 2001, and it's great for making drum lines and loops. I've always made hip hop (i've had turntables and records since 96...lol), but I had a roommate a while back who used Fruity Loops for drum n bass tracks, and they sounded great. You should have no problem making any kind of patterns you want in FL.

I have never recorded instruments or vocals with FL though. If you play guitar and are recording yourself, then i'd get a program like Cubase, Nuendo, or even Pro Tools. I have personally used Cubase VST5.1 forever, and have no problems with it.

My usual pattern is to make drums and foundation in FL, and sometimes Reason, and then export that to Cubase to sequence the song and record any vocals or other instruments.

If you have any questions, let me know.

Use Pro Tools. I doubt you want to spend that much though.

I've used Pro Tools (not too much) but there's nothing really special about it to me...Cubase gets the job done just fine. The majority of my recording is vocals...maybe Pro Tools is better for live instruments, but I've recorded drums, bass & guitar before using Cubase.

I have a PC though, and most of the entertainment industry uses Mac's...so I don't know if that makes a difference

The new pro tools is amazing, my friend has it. He can do almost anythin he wants. But yeah it is mainly for full bands. I'm sure you could do hip hop/rap or whatever, but i'm sure there are better programs for that genre.

Tabit has a free download. not sure if it is what your looking for. you can add drums guitar bass pretty much any instrument. you can even change the way it is played. (electric acoustic etc.) i used it to write songs for a band i was in.
