Newspaper bailout coming!
Is there anything the Democrats won't bail out? Seeing that newspapers helped get Obama elected, no wonder Democrats are trying to save them. :( Let's raise tax on Americans and give failing institutions tax exemptions as non-profits?
With many U.S. newspapers struggling to survive, a Democratic senator on Tuesday introduced a bill to help them by allowing newspaper companies to restructure as nonprofits with a variety of tax breaks.
"This may not be the optimal choice for some major newspapers or corporate media chains but it should be an option for many newspapers that are struggling to stay afloat," said Senator Benjamin Cardin.
A Cardin spokesman said the bill had yet to attract any co-sponsors, but had sparked plenty of interest within the media, which has seen plunging revenues and many journalist layoffs.
Cardin's Newspaper Revitalization Act would allow newspapers to operate as nonprofits for educational purposes under the U.S. tax code, giving them a similar status to public broadcasting companies.

So that would mean much fewer advertisements except for telethons?
Newspapers are a part of the market that is failing...it's survival of the fittest and they obviously aren't very fit. If they can't restructure themselves to somehow remain profitable and survive, then they're welcome to go the way of the 8-track and VCR. If consumers don't want them and there's not enough business to keep them around, what's the point in it? Because some people don't want to give up their traditional Sunday sports section?

won't do you any good anyway ...
China has called for the eventual replacement of the dollar as the world’s reserve currency, in a sign of its growing concern about the dominant role played by the US in the global economy.

My local paper comes in both print and online form. I think newspapers need to make a transition to full online status. Most people get their news today from the Internet and television anyway, so the print form has become redundant and very slow compared to the instant access of today's media. There's also the issue of saving paper by removing print newspapers.
