I don't like book value because most of the time they are overpriced. I'm not going to pay a lot more when i know i can get it cheaper somehwere else.

I find it funny how it is almost universally expected, or assumed, for people to buy at a percentage of BV. How is it, then, that BV is accurate, or even a legitimate basis, for the value of a card? If BVs were accurate, people would be buying at, or close to, BV price, and not a significantly lower percentage of it.
How do people who use BV reconcile the fact that most cards sell for less than 30% or so of BV, yet in trades they still use full BV as a negotiating point? How do people not see that there will be discrepancies? What reason is there to use an arbitrarily determined value as something valid?

On the other side of that, lots of more rare oddballs sell for a significant percentage OVER "book value" because the books get such a small sampling of data for them, they're wildly inaccurate. Ditto for all those '70s & '80s minor league sets that book for $50+ and have no stars in them whatsoever. Sure they may be rare, but low supply doesn't automatically warrant a higher price if no one is demanding them.

I have been back and forth on the issue for the longest time. I used to trade by BV, but it got to the point where I don't care. I traded $1,500 BV of gu and auto for five boxes of 90s basketball base and inserts. Needless to say, BV is not an issue.
I feel that if both sides are happy with the deal and the cards they're getting, who cares?

I think a card is worth what someone is will to pay or trade for it...ive got a crosby auto 06-07,,, that says its worth 100-200 in BV... but i wouldnt give someone 20$ for,it, now ovechkin maybe...it all depends who likes the player
