Sixth Obama appointee has tax issues

Sebelius reveals she owed back taxes

Kathleen Sebelius revealed Tuesday that she recently paid nearly $8,000 in back taxes and interest, becoming the sixth Obama nominee to have tax issues.

In the letter, released Tuesday by the committee and the Department of Health and Human Services, the Kansas governor said she had errors in her 2005, 2006 and 2007 tax returns.

It is becoming clear why democrats have no problem raising taxes. It is easy to raise taxes when you don't pay them yourself.

I was talking to my boss about this and he brought up an interesting point that it could be saying something about how obsurd the tax codes are. I can see it both ways myself, but even more of a reason to break up the IRS and move to a national sales tax.

Agreed, but part of it was counting the interest for a house they had sold...that's pretty obvious.

But I'm definitely for a flat tax of some sort, sales tax would work fine too.

im curious what kind of business expenses she was taking that she didn't have sufficient documentation for...

but how was she deducting mortgage interest off a mortgage she didn't even have any more?

i think most of these people cheat with the hopes of not getting audited

It's probably something like just not having a receipt for an expenditure, but still...

That's what I was wondering. With my mortgage, the mortgage company sends a document with the interest listed. Basically, you have to knowingly document it if they didn't send a coupon showing the amount...

right...the bank should've sent a 1098 Mortgage Interest Statement...and in lieu of that, she should've had account statements or some documentation to prove the amount she claimed...if she didn't have either of those, then she pulled the number straight out of the air....and that would be fraud, not just a simple mistake.

people owing back taxes isn't that uncommon...mistakes are made, documents are sent to the wrong address, or with incorrect information on it...people file and then get letters from the IRS saying they missed something or whatever, and then they have to ammend to include the income they missed, or prove the expenses they took.

Just because you owe the IRS back taxes & interest doesn't necessarily mean you did anything wrong...but when so many public officials have recently had tax problems, it makes me think there's more to it than just not having a receipt or making a mistake
