Ranger playoff hopes on thin ice
BY Peter Botte
October is the signature time for the sport that opened Monday, but the NHL season is only beginning in the month that made Reggie Jackson famous.
The Rangers' 10-2-1 season-opening run as a collection of Mr. Octobers is nothing but a distant memory now. Their once-solid playoff footing has taken on the feel of another late-season Mets collapse entering Monday night's home match against Montreal. "We have to see it as a great challenge and a great opportunity to hopefully go out there and get three wins and make the playoffs," goalie Henrik Lundqvist said after practice Monday in Greenburgh. "We still believe we can do it. Of course, we wanted to be in a better position, if you asked me that a couple of months ago. But here we are and we have to make the best of it and try to pull it off."
