Pierre McGuire is an idiot- dumb SI article
so i get my sports illustrated today and read the hockey playoff previews- his prediction for flames-blackhawks- calgary in 6. among his reasons - iginla and jokinen big size advantage over blackhawks "diminutive duo" of toews and kane.
umm there were so many dumb points in the article i don't know where to begin.
first "diminutive size" has nothing to do with hockey skill- see wayne gretzky
second part of the "diminutive duo", jonathan toews is about 6'2" 210, or slightly bigger than iginla.
third- the blackhawks beat calgary 4-0 in the season series, out scoring them something like 19-7.
fourth- there was no mention of marty havlat (6'1 204 as if that mattered)
who led the hawks with 77 points and had 2 goals in the win tonight
i have the feeling his points were written on deadline, like a high schooler making up things and hoping his teacher won't notice he has no idea what he's talking about
the correct prediction should have been - blackhawks in 5Last edited by wolf1bh; 04-16-2009 at 11:46 PM.

Sad thing is, he probably figures no one will read it since hockey isn't as popular, so he thinks he can put anything. If they have anything in SI about hockey, I'm usually pretty pumped to read it, but I'm usually disappointed because the person who wrote the article knows nothing about hockey.

ya the wierd part is mcguire is a longtime hockey guy he was a scout i think and an announcer for montreal but i don't see how you can pick a team that was dominated against in the regular season and doesn't even have home ice advantage. if he had said, i'm gonna go against all logic and just pick calagary out of the blue, i might have respected his opinion a wee bit more.
but ya the new SI has little capsules for every series

I dread when Ranger games are on NBC and he is doing his "thing" I usually end up screaming about what an idiot he is and has absolutely no clue and why is he there in the first place....then I Pause the TiVo and walk away for a half an hour...then I can fast forward thru his comments when I spot his shiney head on the screen

McGuire is one of the most knowledgeable and interesting people in the game to listen to. He definitely does "amp it up" for the NBC audience compared to his TSN work. Why? I don't know. Maybe the NBC execs think that Americans need that type of bombastic delivery in a game to keep them interested. I personally can't stand listening to Doc Emrick and some of his play-calling. "Fleury waffleboards that one off to the dasher" is a ridiculous way to say "Blocker save by Fleury, puck in the corner."
Remember, just because you disagree with somebody - doesn't necessarily make them an idiot. And this is one of those cases where that statement is very true.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Here's a nice little stat for ya:
Khabibulin is 22-5-3 in his career against Calgary entering the playoffs - so make that 23-5-3. Blackhawks in 5 or 6, enough said
Patrick Kane's dad said that the Blackhawks strategy is to use their speed against the Calgary defense, and that they think that will overwhelm them...for an inside opinion..

Pierre is a little man who wants so badly to be heard, last year during the cup finals he spit out this wonderfull insight. Eddie O (Pierre hows the condition of the ice down there) Pierre's response (Well edzo its fine now but as the game goes on its really gonna deteriorate.) Really ice that gets worse as you skate on it who knew.

He was asked a question and he answered it. I'm not sure exactly what you would have him say in that situation.

McGuire has a big mouth, seems to love the sound of his own voice a little too much, I think desperately wants to become famous (at a Don Cherry level)..... but I wouldn't call him an idiot. He's actually a pretty smart guy. Back in the day.... when he used to do a lot of Radio.... he was a REALLY good guy to hear analyse thing. Ever since they put him in front of a camera, he's taken on this over-the-top persona, that I just can't stand.
That all being said, I'm going to agree with him on the series. Calgary in 6. He shouldn't have compared just the size of the two players on each team.... but the whole teams. Calgary is a lot bigger, and they play a lot bigger. After 3 games, the Hawks are going to look broken down.
Nothing against Chicago.... I'd much rather see them win than the Flames. (Calgary is #1 on my list of teams that I like seeing crash and burn). I've just got the eerie feeling that Calgary loses in the SCF..... not round 1.
