    a little help now...

Although I have been collecting for 25+ years on and off, I am a bit rusty. You see...I stopped in to see Jamie who owns the Dugout here in Indy last week. I instantly had the urge to pull out the two monster boxes that I had stored away some 10 years ago and see if any of the gems I stored away had turned to gold. I found no gold but I did discover some silver. Jamie explained to me that alot had changed in the hobby over the years. Rookies it seems have taken a back seat to Autos and jersey cards. So I went out and purchased several boxes in hopes of scoring some nice GU's and Autos for trade bait to build my rookie collection. These boxes produced some nice cards in todays market. 30+ game used jersey cards and around 15 autographed cards.

I scored several big name jersey cards...Manning,Brady,Shaq,Rose ect...One card stood out and seemed special. This is where I have questions. I pulled a 2007 Carson Palmer jersey card that had a very nice patch. The card doesn't have much book value but the patch is much nicer than any of the patches I have seen on other cards. So my question is this...Is this patch worth more than a simple white swatch? Please view pic below and sound off.

    Thanks

Collecting is a different world now than it was in the 90's, isn't it? I just got back into in 2007 after dropping out in 1992, and, needless to say, I was pretty overwhelmed with all the new developments and the changed mentality from set building to jerseys/auto mania.

I don't really have anything to add concerning your question, except that some people seem to kick up alot of dust about a patch being multi-colored, as compared to just one color. Whether its just salesmanship or that really does make a huge difference, I will leave it to others more knowledgable than myself to guide you on the subject. Just wanted to wish you luck and say that, as always, collect what you like. I got in a bad habit when I first came back of trying to buy box after box of all the new issues. Needless to say, it put a real dent in my wallet. Find a set/player/type that you like and go for it.

    Again, good luck to you.

we're in the same boat - collected like crazy from mid 70s on in all four sports - just got back last year trying to get my son into collecting, found SCF and started finishing old sets.

Good luck with the Palmer - I try to move any gu and auto I get for rookies.

Worth alot more then a simple white patch to the right person. A big bangles fan would scoop it up cause thats a nasty patch. But lets say a giants fan would just kind of blow it off.

    Aggreed!!

I think I figured this card out. It is actually a prime jersey. 2x-4x the regular GU. So the book value actually takes into account the nice patch. This seems like a better patch than alot of the other prime patches I have seen though so maybe a Palmer fan will jump on it.

Man I miss the days when we used to rip into wax looking for our fav stars back in the 70s...I remember peddeling my schwinn up to hooks and ripping 3 boxes of 1976 wax packs searching for that cool Pete Rose All-Star card of him in the dugout with the shades flipped up!

Tell me about it . . . I used to ride my bike over to a local gas station to buy packs of 1986 Fleer basketball for 50 cents a pack . . . wish I could go back in time and buy a few of those boxes to leave unopened--anyone here have a Delorean with a flux capacitor handy?

lol...Don't even get me started. I recently sold the last of my original G.I. Joe collection. My old hot wheels are long gone. Boxes of comics sold by my mom at some distant garage sale. I have no idea what happened to my beer can collection lol...I can't imagine what I would do if my son started a beer can collection. I do still have my original Electronic Football game in original box and my Super Jock football game.

    Booyah,

To this day I cannot figure out why I didn't buy any 86 basketball when I was a kid. I was in my collecting prime, I was a hoops head, and I have thousands of baseball and football, even some hockey, from that era. I can only conclude that my local stores didn't carry the fleer hoops. That, or I was an idiot.

So 23 years later, I'm trying to start a set...lucky me.

    I love the 80s.
