Would have to be Steve Mason though I don't agree with RGM81 that deserving goalies get overlooked for the Calder trophy unless you think Price should have won over Kane. Goalies seem to win enough times in the past that I don't see them being overlooked.

Another bad year for nominees, at least in this category. Where is Pekka Rinne and Drew Doughty? Versteeg isn't even top 5 let alone top 3. Clearly these nominees are voted by guys that only read stats and don't actually watch games.

I would rank this year's rookies this way...

    Mason - clear #1 choice
Doughty - most minutes, played every key situation
Rinne - if they would have made the playoffs, he could have won
Ryan - didn't play enough for me to win, but he was the best offensive rookie this year
Wheeler - played the majority of the year on the third line, but had a great year
Versteeg - played on second and third line and didn't do much after first half of the year

I don't think anyone can really contest Steve Mason as the Calder winner.

Versteeg was probably the best rookie to pick up for a fantasy team, as he was leading in points and PIMs for a while... Ryan had a spectacular year, and Rinne did pretty dang well in that backwater city, but in terms of what these players brought to their team as a whole? Nobody even comes close to Mason.

With a very mediocre defence, I think Steve Mason's 9 shutouts in 61 games speaks volumes it self. I think he is a huge reason why Columbus made the playoffs this season. It's just too bad they had to meet Detroit in the first round.

Mason has to be a lock.

I wish Jonas Hiller was a rookie in 2008-09, he played amazing this year in my opinion.

Why is Pekke Rinne nowhere in there? He has been just as good as Mason. I do not see how a guy like Versteeg can get nominated when he is not even one of the 5 best players on his team. Ryan and Hiller carried Anaheim, as did Mason and Rinne with their respective teams. Versteeg started hot, and then played poorly the second half.

you nailed it on the head. honestly if you go by true impact player and not great stats, doughty should be up there, maybe not top 3 but for sure top 5
