wings win 6-3..who will start game 5 for the ducks now??? By the way I didn't think it was possible...but I think Giguere's pads are actually bigger than Jonas Hiller's.

Yep, thats the era of hockey we are currently in as far as goaltending is concerned. Throw on the largest equipment legally allowed, and drop to your knees. Thats one thing you gotta give Osgood credit for, he may be pretty average, but you know HE is an average goalie, not his equipment. Too many guys get by solely on their equipment these days.

Osgood is not the average goalie in my mind as far as careers go. With most goalies you see them play their best hockey when they're young, and gradually degrade with age. Ozzy is pretty much the opposite. Osgood stunk all throughout the 90's, and has progressively gotten better with age. I believe last year was the best of his career. Although he pretty much took this regular season off, he has been playing very well since the start of the playoffs and has a very reputable save % and GAA. And not to mention he has 3 stanley cups.
As for pad size..it seems to me like Marty Brodeurs are about half the size of hillers and giguere. Brodeurs pads barely come over the knee and are not very thick at all. As for Chris Osgood his look a bit bigger than brodeurs but still not even close to hillers and giggy's

honestly, i lost a lot of respect for you after this. to accredit a goalies skills to gear is pathetic. i am a goalie and find it very rude. if anything, it makes it harder for a goalie cause they cant move as well. to say that big equipment is the reason some goalies have success is ignorant and plain rude. you're basically saying that luongo and lundqvist only got by because of their pads cause both of them had huge leg pads before they cut down. now i get how you could think that goalies use huge gear but the restrictions on NHL goalie's gear is drastic from the past. equipment is a LOT smaller.

Hes not saying that they get by solely on their pads...but that the pads are a big part or at least a chunk of the reason why. Hiller and giggy's pads both come about 10-12 inches above the knee and they come out off the knee so that when they butterfly the pads block everything 5-hole. The rules should be made to cut down how far above the knee they can go, and also the pads should be tied down to the quads/thighs so they dont stick a foot off their legs and block the entire 5 hole without the legs actually being closed. The way hillers pads are now...they allow him to have his legs wide in the butterfly, and block the 5-hole instead of forcing him to close his legs and have them pointing straght back, thus cutting down his butterfly.

You are entitled to your opinion that is fine. The truth however is that todays goalies are not nearly as skilled as goalies from previous eras. The Roy element of the game is fascinating in my opinion because he revolutionized the game in so many ways. His style is what he is remembered most for, but at the same time he was a big guy and wore the equipment that fit him. What people fail to understand is that his success with the style was because he had great reflexes, and primarily, because he was a big guy. However, since the mid 90's his style of goaltending has been adopted by the majority of coaches/goalies. The problem is that smaller guys who lack the obvious size necessary to play the style correctly, compensate for it with gigantic equipment. There is no reason a guy who is 6'0 should be wearing the same equipment guys who are 6'5 are wearing.
As far as the idea that it makes it hardly for a guy to move, sure. But with certain goalies their equipment is literally so big that they do not need to move that much in the first place. Manny Legace is a guy who comes to mind. He is 5'9, wearing the same equipment Ben Bishop at 6'6 wears. When on his knees the pads literally cover the entire bottom of the net, side to side.
Now I am not saying Luongo is what is because of his pads, because he is a larger guy, who actually fits the mold of a Roy. Lundqvist however, fits the mold of the modern day Michelin man to a T. So do a lot of guys. Giguere is one that comes to mind. In fact, he has even been quoted as saying "I wish I could play the way Marty [Brodeur] does, but I can't. I have to rely on positioning and size" Hockey News August 2008. Hint, hint, he is 6'1 so the size he is referring to obviously is not his body.

I disagree about goalies from the previous era's being as good if we are talking about the mid 70's until the 90's. First off the goalies had small and relatively crappy equipment, coupled with the fact that leagues expansion brought in a lot of under qualified players who weren't really true NHL caliber.
