Remember when a jersey was enough?

Anyone else remember the hobby back in the days when pulling a jersey card was the highlight of the day (maybe the week!). You didn't care who it was, the fact was you got a game used jersey card! You could pull a Andrei Zyuzin jersey and could not wait to show it off.

That was back when jersey cards were scarce and were the pinnacle of card collecting. Yeah, autographed cards had been around and they are cool, but when UD inserted that frist bunch of jerseys at the 1:720 pack ratio the hunt was on.

Now it seems like pulling a jersey card is an afterthought. You can hit a Ilya Kovalchuk jersey and your exitement level would rival that of a 90's collector who just pulled his third Topps Bob Boughner base card.

Now a jersey is not enough. It has to be multi-colored. It has to be serial numbered. It has to be autographed. It has to be the blue parallel version, or the gold one, or the red one...

I applaud UD for expanding the horizons of card collecting, but maybe some contraction would be good for the hobby, too.

My question is this. Can you contract it and be realistic? That would be like giving up the xbox360 and then going back to the regular xbox or further down the line nintendo, ps, atari 2600, etc. Can you really take it back? I don't think people would go for it.

There are ways to make jersey cards more appealing once again - instead of getting 2 in every box, make it one in every two boxes; shorten and strengthen the checklists; bigger and better swatches; number them to /100 or less. UD did something out of the ordinary with the Centennial set, making autos the focus at 2 per box with jerseys only 1 in every 3 boxes. Now, they were really tiny swatches and some players had two different versions, but those jersey cards are much more sought-after than almost any others from this year's product releases.

Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Actually the first game jersey cards were more like a 1:3500 ratio, and booked for over a thousand in some cases.

I find that I don't buy boxes for the jersey's, but just for the hunt of the great pull.

I bought UD1 yesterday. Paid 90.00Ca, I got my 6 rookies, one exclusive, 2 jerseys and some inserts. It was fun to open, I guess I'm easy to please.

I love Upper Deck series 1 and 2. It's the rookies that keep me buying.

If jersey's were to be rationed out again, there would be some serious kids not happy.

Stay with the jersey's, and work on design!!

i remember years ago i would buy packs just to pull my favorite players base. getting a rob blake base was like christmas morning. I think i hit two jerseys in years before i actually started in the hobby. Personally, a jersey is crap to me compared to an auto
