    Press Plate Question

I just recently purchased one on Ebay, its a Topps version. Unfortunately, the edges are banged up, and there is some scratching (Mostly on back) is this common for the plates? It was my first and I'm not sure.

Upperdeck trims most of theres and rounds of the corners, I believe this is done due to 1. Wear as the plates are used for production of a cards run. and 2. To keep someone from being able to dulicate the card and say... make conterfits.

A lot of plates have marks from production, and some come out almost completely unscathed. I think that may have to do more with the printer, and their machinery rather than the actual process.

But of course this is mostly speculation and extrapolation.

Ok, that helps a bit. I mean its just the metal plate itself. Its cool because its a 1/1 of my favorite player, I guess I just wasn't expecting it to look as used as it does if that makes sense.

How about posting a scan of it, or a link to the ebay auction. That might help clear it up.

I have a Jordan Staal 07-08 Upper Deck Magenta plate, which is mint. Beautiful condition. But then again I have a 2008 Al Bundy (Ed O'Neil) Spectrum Magenta that is a little rough. small dents and such. They are 1/1's. It's not like you can wait for a better copy to hit the market.

I think your card is fine. As that might have been the way it came out. Of like Mikecole I am no press plate expert either.

It's very normal for these to be banged up. Printers can run through many sets of plates for a single run of cards due to the beating that the plates take. If you find plates that aren't all that banged up they were most likely used towards the end of the run as usually plates get changed out as soon as they're unable to duplicate with quality.
