Thanks for backing me up Bill. This is what I've been saying for months now in this forum. THE LEAGUE CALLS PENALTIES AND SUSPENSIONS BASED OFF THE INJURY THAT OCCURS. Most times if someone gets right back up the refs call nothing, but the second someones injured they think it must have been done illegally. Just like most boarding calls. Some of them are more vicous than others but its only a 2 minute minor. But some are pretty weak but the player gets injured from an awkard fall, so it turns out the player gets 5 and a game. That is wrong. That is just plain wrong. The injury can not be used to make the penalty, it should be the intent of the player, and how vicious the hit is. If its a simple hit from behind and the p layer gets injured, then it should still be 2 minutes. They may not have intended it....or it could have been a little push and the other player embellishes it, which happens very often.
I'm just sick of refs calling penalties based off injuries.

And thats the problem, the rules. Theyre horrible.
And if you say its a great thing, then why is Scott Stevens hailed as a heroe for it and in the Hall of Fame? he made a living off of hitting people in vulnerable positions, and hes considered a god, whats the difference?
Peopel need to get over it, people will get hurt, thats why they get paid millions, because they assume that risk, its the inherent nature of the beast. Same with NFL players. We should stop trying to turn this into baseball. Its not baseball, its a contact sport where injuries happen, and if someone makes a clean hit, I dont want the ref deciding after the fact to call a penalty because the guy got hurt. Thats rediculous plain and simple.

Yes. That makes total sense. How about i ask the refs that made that call, or how about any respectable ref who has read and understands the rule book? Your unwillingness to understand the rules, i will admit is impressive.
As for your complaints rich, i totally agree. The refs need to make the call regardless of injury the moment they see it not after the fact. And Cerealthriller is also correct is his the points he has made. They deemed (i've used this word more times in this thread than my whole life) interference (most likly only because of the injury but was correct if you consult the NHL rule book and not the "pick-up" rule book) and because such injury occurred the play results in a 5 minute major and the gate which is dictated by the rule book.
This all could have been avoided if as the hit was made, an official would have signaled a call (which never happened). I personally agree the call was a result of the injury, but in all honesty all we know is a ref could have asked a linesmen if Havlat has touched the puck or not and then made his call. Usually you don't get that kind of grace to ask a fellow official for help during the flow of a hockey game. We don't know exactly what kind of conversation was had between officials but regardless it looks bad since it was after an injury had occurred.Last edited by griff2311; 05-29-2009 at 12:12 AM.

lol dont you get it...the rules dont matter because the refs dont call the rules. The ref calls the game the way the league wants them to. Otherwise when Chris Pronger Crosschecks Jiri Hudler in the back and sends him flying into Jonas Hiller...it would not result in a Ducks powerplay.

Ahhh a conspiracy theorist? Ok, never mind then. There is no stopping a rolling boulder half way down the hill.

The proper call was made. It sucks, but that's the new NHL for you.
Very entertaining thread though...................NOT!

If its not entertaining than why waste your time on it. It's not like anyone here needs your opinion.

My opinion was the correct answer. So yes, it was needed.
