when is the best time to sell???

i have some cards i need to sell on ebay but wanted everyone's opinion on when the right time is to sell. some of the cards i have were selling for $35-50 at the end of the season and now they are selling for $15-20. i was thinking maybe right before the season starts while expectations may be high.

I would think it would depend on who the player is - if it is an established star I would say during the season would be the best time because that player is going to perform no matter what and when people see someone play good they get the itch to buy their cards. If it is a player that is going to have a make or break season whos cards currently have decent value in hopes of them truely becoming a great player I would sell now because if that player is not playing up to expectations their cards will eventually be worthless. IN MY OPINION players like Reggie Bush, Jamarcus Russell, Vince Young, Carson Palmer's cards would fall into that category- not that they are bad players just the hype is bigger than they are

Im anxious as well to see some of the other responses from people that sell on a regular basis

Well I'm not much of a seller. But I can tell you as a buyer I get my best deals during the offseason. That's when I do the majority of my buying (because the prices come down). There's no doubt that low to mid range cards sell higher during the season. Ther really high end stuff normally doesn't change much.

I think during preseaon when everyone gets a taste is a good time to sell. but keep in mind that alot of new product is coming out and people are looking for hot and new and player collections. IMO list it at the price you want with free shipping and if it doesn't sell, wait til a break out game and get it on ebay quick.

I agree with this with one difference...

It can be kind of a crap shoot, but I try to judge how I think the player is going to do. If you think they're going to be good, save them until they have a couple of big games and put them on Sunday afternoon/evening right after the game. Before last season, I traded for a few Michael Turners because I thought he was going to be a stud. Sure enough, he turned out studly and I sold both autos for about twice what I had in them on a Sunday afternoon...as much or more than they're selling for now, even after a great season. Did the same thing with some Cutler and Tarvaris Jackson (before he flopped). There was some hype in preseason for those guys, but there were still questions too, so waiting until they had good games raised the interest and the price.

Now if you're not sure how they'll do, sell in pre-season. That's the only place I disagree with jjdtx...there are less people looking to buy in general right now and during pre-season, people are getting back around to football and more people are interested. If you have somebody that has high expectations, but you're just not sure about, that's when I would sell those. Personally, I would sell every Stafford I have during pre-season, as I don't have a lot of faith in him being a Matt Ryan. A lot of rookies fall into that category...if you think about it, only a few rookies from each draft actually turn out to be stars or superstars, so most are going to be mediocre to bad. Might as well try to get rid of most of their cards while they still have potential. Some vets that I think fall into that category are Eddie Royal and Brandon Marshall (Cutler would have made them stars, Orton will make them semistars-mediocre), possibly Peyton (he's getting older, lots of changes on the coaching staff, Harrison is gone...I wouldn't sell all of this though, just in case), Joe Flacco (lots of changes on the defense, I don't think they'll be as good this year), and I agree with jjdtx on Reggie Bush and Carson Palmer.
