Is SCF and other Trade Sites Hurting eBay?

I stopped by a local antique shop yesterday. They had sports cards of all types. I was interested in a couple of the cards, but was told the owner had them listed on eBay and I needed to talk straight to him.

The owner was not around so I left my name and number for him to call me. He called a few minutes ago.

We were talking about sports cards and what he collects and what I collect.

As an Off-Site Team Member In Training I mentioned Sports Card Forum and the great trade forums.

He came right out and told me that "trade sites are killing eBay".

It seems people are more willing to go on-line and trade for what they want instead of paying unrealistic prices!
    Duh......really?

And when I asked for his eBay ID, his comment was more-or-less "why? you won't bid". That was the end of the conversation.

What are your thoughts on this?

I wanna know are trade sites (like ours, Beckett, etc.) really that large that it would make a dent in ebay's traffic/sales ??? If so/not where does this person come up with the information he gave you ?? Is there stats and figures, etc.

he sounds like a whiner. Ebay is hurting ebay with some of their own policies

If you ask me ebay and sites like this hurt the shops more than these sites hurt ebay.

I think the trade sites make it a better possibilities for collectors like us to get what we want and vice-versa. We don't have to go to a site like ebay to Bid out other people for that one card and it would cost us a fortune.

Trade sites also bring the following to the attention of many collectors: Bad Sellers, Fake cards, shilling, etc. Granted not everyone views card trading message boards, but those who have and do learn about certain things to avoid.

Agreed, Ebay kills the Hobby shops, seeing you'll find dealers selling boxes and cases close to cost on there, while other shop dealers have to deal with their overhead and costs which make their products and cards higher to stay in business.

What a moron I think Ebays final value fees hurt Ebay a lot more than trading sites.

That guy sounds like a total loser that I'd rather not do business with either way. As for 'site's like these' without them i wouldn't collect cards.

lmao there's no way this site (or any other for that matter) is even touching eBay's sales.

Trading sites might be minutely denting eBay sales, but trading sites are for collectors and hobbyists, what the hobby is supposed to be about...I know a lot of collectors use eBay (myself included), but it's more for people trying to make money. So sorry if the collectors are starting to take back the hobby!

And as someone mentioned, eBay is killing eBay...their own idiotic, money grubbing policies is what's driving down the sales.
