Islanders focus on size in NHL draft
The Islanders have just two players on their NHL roster who are as tall as 6-4 general manager Garth Snow -- 6-6 defenseman Andy Sutton and 6-4 fourth-line banger Tim Jackman. Beyond those two, the Isles' only true size includes 6-3 forward Trent Hunter, 6-2, 223-pound defenseman Brendan Witt and forward Kyle Okposo, who is just 6-1, 200 but is thickly built, strong on the puck and plays with a consistent physical edge.
Both Snow and coach Scott Gordon have mentioned the Islanders' Western Conference road trip in January that included stops in San Jose and Calgary as an eye-opener in terms of how the Sharks and Flames dominated puck possession in large part because of their size. Although the Islanders scored a 2-1 win over Anaheim at home later that month, the Ducks posed the same kind of problems as the other Western Conference powers. The size difference isn't quite as pronounced in the Eastern Conference, but the Isles notice it every time they face, Philadelphia, Washington and New Jersey.
