Patch sickness grading guide
Here's a guide I devised to measure the sickness of patches. 10 is the highest, 1 is the lowest.
10 - complete logo patch
9 - partial logo patch/complete emblem
8 - 5 or more colors/partial emblem
7 - 4 colors
6 - 3 colors, more than 3 breaks
5 - 3 colors, 3 breaks
4 - 2 colors, more than 2 breaks
3 - 2 colors, 2 breaks
2 - 1 color/mostly jersey with minimal patch
1 - piping
For cards with more two or more patches:
First, calculate each patch's individual sickness.
Second, add the individual sicknesses together to get total.
Third, divide the total sickness by the number of patches to get average sickness.

I think you've got a really reasonable, and solid grading scale there.

I agree, this seems like a very reasonable system.

At what number are the words 'sick' and 'nasty' that I hear so often allowed to be used?

Interesting system! Pretty cool, if you ask me...I have a 2.5 (one color, but is more patch than jsy), a 5 and a 6.5 (4 colors, 3 breaks I believe) based on your scale, and I may have more that I can't recall right off hand...not too shabby :-)
