Question about BGS grading

After carefully reading many informative threads on this forum, I have decided to send a bunch of cards (100) to BGS vs. PSA for grading. The lot includes mostly 1980-1990 rookies and second year baseball, with a couple from 1975-79. My question is, since it seems BGS is a bit tougher grader, what value does a score less than 8.0 have? In other words, I feel a few of these might score 7.5 to 8.0, and wonder if it is worth spending the money to grade them at all. What is the break even point? (When does the graded card value equal its value ungraded?) Thanks for any advice...

The best answer I can give would be, To do an ebay search for that specific card/ grade.

If you are going to send in 80's and 90's rookies you better make sure they are going to get at least a 9. Scrutinize each card with a 10X lupe and if you see any imperfection put it aside. As far as the 70's cards go, I would send to PSA instead of BGS if you are looking to re sell. They will sell for more in a PSA holder just like the more modern card will sell for more in a BGS holder.

I was going to say the same thing, John, but I have a question, wouldn't it make sense to get all your cards psa graded, if you are keeping them for the long haul, because one day your card will be 30-40+ older.

I have heard that point be brought up but I think its a lot different with modern cards. The older cards now will always be made with that cardboard we loved as kids. They are harder to find in mint condition. That is why there are such huge premiums put on certain years especially 1971. Now, with modern you have these high tech chrome, thick stock cards. Everyone keeps them mint and protects them. So in 30 years most people in my opinion are still going to look at a 2003 card as a miodern card. It's almost like cars. After so many years it becomes a classic(20 yrs i think, not sure). Do you consider a 1983 Chevy Caprice a classic car?) Not many people do. I myself prefer PSA and do not use BGS. But facts are facts and BGS with modern cards sell for more.

thanks for your info, well noted, and I agree, but I guess it is one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't...and no I would consider a 83 chevy a classic..but what about in 2013, as it might be that many around. I dunno know decisions suck.

I hear ya, I look at it as when i see something old and nostalgic like cards or a car i say wow that is pretty cool looking and has a certain look to it. But I think when in 2013 and I see a 1983 Chevy Caprice I am going to say, damn, that is one hideous looking car. Maybe the 80's decade is a bad example. Bad cars, bad hair, bad clothes and so much more. LOL

Thanks for the advice. I am going to really examine this lot before I send it in. Actually, before I found this board, I was gung-ho to send them all to PSA, since I read a lot of criticism of BGS. But, I really like the subgrading system, and the fact that most of what I have worth grading is 1980 and up seems to indicate BGS.

Yeah.. I wouldnt even send in to BGS. PSA is probly 3-1 in cards. And as to condition. If it comes back BGS 8 as vintage. It still means more. Take that into consideration.

Prophet, you wouldn't send anything to BGS? Send even the 80's and up stuff to PSA? I read that BGGS isn't a good way to go as far as resale value goes...
