I'm about half way done. I sent an email to the guy to compliment him on his work, lol...he got back to me fairly quick to thank me for my interest.
This guy is hilarious. I love how he knows what to say to get the seller going and it works every time.
Oh, and how he offers to pay in Monopoly money!

I think he work was pretty funny.... and certainly when the people on the other end (the Sellers) start threatening him, or calling him names..... they've got it coming. I do really question the need, or even the appropriateness of trying to call out people for trying to sell their "junk wax" for way too much.
I would suggest that you've got three categories that anyone selling this stuff would fall under:
- People who have never really had much of an idea about the hobby, and just blindly think that their stuff should be worth the $100s they're asking
- People who used to have a great handle on the hobby, but have been out of it for 10 or 15 years. They're just trying to sell off the stuff they've got stored away.... and figure they know what they're doing because they knew the hobby very well back in the early 90s.
- People who do know the hobby well, and are just trying to make more money that the cards are actually worth, by taking advantage of people that (as buyers) would fit into one of the above to categories.
Now if the seller appears to be someone who falls into the 3rd category, I've got no sympathy for them. Let 'em have it :) People in the first two categories though.... meh, I don't have a problem with what they're doing.
Even if you were to go out and buy a price guide. How is someone how hasn't bought hockey cards in 15 years supposed to know that the $40 Beckett lists for the price of a 1991-92 Upper Deck set is way too much? How are they supposed to know that I can go on eBay and buy one for $10 ??
The answer, I guess, is that they could do their research.... but think about it. We're talking about someone who's got a few boxes / binders of cards that they collected almost 20 years ago. They just want to be rid of them, and figure they MUST be worth a couple hundred bucks. They stick 'em up online to try and move them. Why is this person going to sit down and put in hours of research into selling this stuff, especially when they're only going to be doing it once.

Just bookmarked the badwax blog. Pretty funny to see the items for sale and their prices. Typically that's what is always on craigslist whenever I look. The only part I don;t like is when the guy gets ****** and calls them scammers. It's my experience that they aren't scammer as much as they are clueless. They either used to collect in the 80's and are working from when you could get full book value or they just think that all cards go up in value and that 25 year old cards today equal the card values of 1960's and 1970's cards back in the 80's.

If the Pro Set lot contained the short printed holograms then the price tag is justified, but this is not the case.

Those two holograms alone should fetch a lot of $.
