OT Computer Hardware Question

I told a friend I would look into helping them "upgrade" their system and was hoping to get some advice from more knowledgable folk.
Based on the following specifications and with the exclusion of buying a new processor, are there any ways to improve the performance of this computer system. Due to the chassis design adding a p4 will kick off too much heat.

Actually, what would the benefits and drawbacks be off adding new hardware I.E. Video card (with slot mounted fan), Raid controller card, etc. where applicable. the chassis is an MSI hetis small form factor case.
The Spec:
Socket 478 Intel Celeron D 2.53ghz
2 GB DDR 400 Dual Channel (2 of 2 Ram Slots Used)
integrated video
Sata (Probably sata 1)
Two Open PCI Slots (full height)
External DVD Drive due to space constrainsts (externally powered)
Onboard Audio
I believe the chipset is of the 865 variety.

The PC would be used for Internet, Mail, HTML, photo editing and light gaming IE age of empires II, Madden Football, Etc.

Any tips are much appreciated.

the colder the better
