The real questions about the NHL's potential return to ESPN
By Greg Wyshynski
Ken Campbell of The Hockey News wrote a piece about the NHL's decision to re-up with NBC, which was announced during the press event for the Fenway Park Winter Classic, and wonders if the two-year extension is an ESPN-influenced decision:
The league struck only a two-year deal with NBC for one very important reason. Its cable deal with Versus expires in two years and the league is hoping that by having both its over-the-air and cable contracts up for renewal at the same time it will have more options when it comes to its next television contracts. "It was the right deal at the right time," said one industry insider.

The benefit to the NHL of returning to ESPN far outweighs any possible lost revenues from Versus or NBC. Bettman needs to make sure that after this round of deals is up, ESPN is broadcasting games regularly. I wonder if the sunbelt teams might not be in a better position now, if people saw them on tv once in a while.

Are there any revenues from NBC? That deal is so brutally awful for the NHL that it makes you wonder. "NBC paid no upfront rights fee, instead splitting advertising revenue with the league after meeting its own production and distribution costs." (Thanks Wikipedia!) Yet Bettman still gives NBC preferential treatment over TSN and CBC.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...
