Question about going to the back of the field
Why is it that if you wreck you car before qualifying you do not have to fall to back of like Smoke did not at Lenox Industrial Tools 301? And if you blow an engine like Kahne did at Michigan before qualifying that you must fall back to the rear of field?

Per Jayski....
NASCAR RULES FOR A DRIVER GOING TO THE BACK OF THE FIELD:
ENGINE CHANGE - anytime during the race weekend.
BACKUP CAR - after qualifying, if a team/driver goes to a backup car, they start at the rear of the field; if before qualifying and the backup car and engine are presented for inspection, the driver starts where they qualify.
That really doesn't answer your question as to WHY it's like that, but that's all I could really find....and I was wondering the same thing.
