WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Someone please, PLEASE, explain the reasoning behind not trading GU for inserts or RC's, auto's for GU, etc., you get the idea. If you collect an individual player, as I do the players in my sig, what is the difference what is being traded as long as you are getting the cards you want/need for your personal collection? I just cannot understand the rationale behind this. If someone, anyone, has a reasonable explanation, please give it to me.

I've always wondered about this issue myself. My initial reaction upon learning these peculiarities was "How childish!" But perhaps I don't know all the facts. Do the "investors" figure that GU/auto cards are somehow a better investment? Did some younger collectors start a precedent that just became a popular barrier to trading? Are there a lot of older collectors who also subscribe to this practice?

To those who don't trade GU/autos for base/inserts: What makes $50 bv in base/insert cards inferior to $50 in GU/auto cards? Maybe there is a perfectly logical, valid reason for this, but no one has made it clear to me yet.

There are some collectors out there who will trade GU/autos for base/inserts at even bv. However, they seem to be quite outnumbered.

As for me, I don't trade away my GU/auto cards--they go right into my PC. I do like acquiring GU/base cards for my sets but I don't propose to trade my base/inserts for GU/autos because I know some easily-offended collectors think it is rude.

I'm sure this practice isn't gonna go away any time soon. So what I've done is just gotten used to it.

I guess the thinking is GU are harder to get then inserts/commons/rcs but everyday that seems to be more and more untrue.

Personally I'd gladly trade my GU for stuff I need of players I collect but I can understand if some don't like to do that because GU are much easier to trade.

But GU aren't easier to trade because so many people take this approach. This is the instance I had that made me post this - Collector posts that he wants to trade for (insert player's name). I respond that I have three cards, he says I like them and need them. Great, I look at his site - I want this RC and this GU in return. BV is exactly the same. Collector then says RC has been traded (no problem), and I don't want to trade GU for the cards you have. ???????????????? You just said you wanted those cards and needed them for your personal collection!!!! These people piss me off to no end. They are not a collector - I don't even know what to call them. Either you want the cards of that certain player or you don't. Now don't get me wrong - I won't trade say a $200 Peyton Manning auto for ten $20 cards of Mark Brunell, but there is a big difference there. The total of these cards was only $40 and YOU SAID YOU NEEDED THEM!!!

OK, I guess I'm off my soapbox. I posted this question on two boards, and I still don't have a logical explanation.

You probably won't get a logical explanation until someone from the opposite side replies. I agree with you completely but I don't get upset over people being that way. We all have a right to our opinion and I respect that despite disagreeing with it.

I respect it, it just irks me. Don't say you are looking for "everything" of a certain player, then place stipulations on a trade to acquire "everything" of that player.

It can get frustrating especially if you searched through all your cards to find cards of a player or team someone needed but it seems like that is the nature of the hobby nowdays. Just have to learn to deal with it.

I agree 100% with you. I love being able to get #'d cards/refractors of guys I colelct like Dontrelle Willis for cheap GU. And trading GU for good prospects RC's or someone you collect is also good as RC's carry a "skyrocketing" premium for when the player does well. You rarely see GU go up in value unless its a RC GU such as Bowman's Best.

I've traded gu'd for non gu'd of guys I collect. I've also turned down trades asking for my autos for commons cards. I know autos are harder to pull especially star or retired/hof players. I try to trade my autos for autos I need of my players because if I don't have an auto to trade, 99 times out of 100 I'm not gonna get the auto I need.

I personally havnt done it but I have seen it all.... The logic that I see from football is that now n days you are getting almost every type of pack to have a gu per pack.. Absolute memorabilia with 6 jerseys and two autos per box((1 per pack)) Reflections with one relic per pack((almost, 2 packs have all rookies)) People get tired of seeing all this at once.. They dont want to see a jersey in every pack compared to an auto. You also have jerseys in which sometimes its not even worn by a player on there. They have it worn by somebody else for 5 minutes and thats it. I personally dont mind trading gu for rc's base if the deal is right but personally I dont like doing autos for base unless its something I know that I can use... I have to keep my autos for situations like that because I just dont get many to trade.

Now the thing that I guarantee will set people off is when they say this card is only selling for 15.00 on ebay and the one you have is selling for 12.00 I wont trade it for that. They provide ONE link to each and thats it.. I HATE HATE HATE HATE people that use ebay as there beckett.
