Kareem's record wont be broken due to the fact that he played for such a long time. I don't forsee any current players being effective in their 40's O_o

Lebron will do it. Jordan would have done it if not for retiring twice.

Yeah, barring an injury, LBJ is on pace to do it. According to NBA.com, he'll break into the top 25 in 3 more seasons. That will put him at 28 years old. He'll still need another 17,000 points, but it's possible. I think he needs to step up his PPG average to around 30 for several seasons. What's hurting him is the amount of bench time he sees. He was down to 37 MPG last season. That's down from around 40 since he entered the league.

The King is going to be the one doing this. Jordan was going to but he decided to play baseball for 2 years.

Time to give my opinion! :-)

I'm going to say yes, and I believe Lebron James will be the player to do this. He hasn't even hit his prime yet, and he's already averaging nearly 30 PPG each season...so, he really just needs to average 25 PPG for the next 12 years to surpass Kareem's total. Is this tough to attain, sure, but I think it will happen...plus, if he is close to the record, he will probably keep playing until he breaks it.

    2nd that.

Im going to use a very complex way of deciding this. I will use the Bill James formula that some of you might remember that Bill James came up with the help decide these sorts of questions, here is the formula.

    Chance of record = [(remaining seasons * established level)/amount needed] - 0.5

So for Lebron lets say he plays till hes 38, which I expect is the age he will retire. Hes 25 now which would mean 13 remaining seasons. 13 multiplied by 38,387 is 499,031. divide that by 12,993. You get 38.5. Then you subtract 0.5. That makes his odds of doing it are 38%. I will now go onto Random.org and randomly pick a number out of 100. If it is between 1-38 then Lebron will break the record, if its higher, he will not.... The number was 3, and Lebron will in fact break the record. Woohoo

Kobe entered the league at only 16, so he could see him playing 20 years in the league. I think LeBron has a great shot at breaking it, but I think Kobe still has a chance at the record to.
