The Truth about Cash for Clunkers

What about the estimated 12 percent of Americans aged 15 years and above who don't drive, period? What about all the adults who live in the 8 percent of households that don't have a vehicle? What about half the residents of Manhattan, who took transit planners' decades-old dream to heart and "got out of their cars"? What about those who are too poor to drive? The answer: All of these people are subsidizing whoever turns in an SUV or crappy old $800 K-Car like the one I used to drive. Not only that, but what do you think happens to the $800 car market when the guvmint is handing out $4,500 checks to have the things destroyed? I'll go ahead and state the obvious: It shrinks, making it more expensive for the truly poor people, the ones who want to make that daring leap from the bus system to an awful old bucket of rust.
So no, not "everyone" was helped by cash-for-clunkers...
...Cash-for-clunkers amounts to a rounding error in Tim Geithner's nose-hair at this point, which is probably why at least some liberals seem so genuinely baffled by the disproportionate criticism it has drawn. But for some of us it's also a nearly perfect symbol of economic statism run amok. The federal government is taking from the many, giving it to the less-than-many, destroying functional cars, funneling money to an auto industry that it already largely owns (at a hefty taxpayer price tag), then taking multiple (and multiply premature) bows for rescuing the economy and the auto industry in the process.

This cars are going to be sold to someone and the governement is going to get that money back. I bet you that if the car is working somneone is going to make some money out of it

Yeah the cars are being demolished...we can't have these polluting evil machines warming our global! Even if it means a poor person who can't afford a car otherwise goes without...but the government is taking care of the poor...somehow...

Maybe you dont see it Shortking, so i'll point it out. I too, am not trying to offend you, but this is the typical left mind at work. he makes a very valid point, instead of arguing the point, you attack his character.

I hate seeing this crap. Watching them ruin some really good cars. Its such a huge waste. Ruining perfectly good cars. It is beyond wasteful and stupid. I love how they are trying to claim that this program was meant for stimulus. This is green crap, but they found a way to make it seem less obsurd by linking it to stimulus.

I don't believe in the redistribution of wealth, the stealing from the rich to give to the poor, that the government is forcing, but apparently a lot of people do and have bought into it hook, line, and sinker. I was pointing out how this is exactly counterproductive to that end...so if you are for stealing from the rich to give to the poor, then you should be against this program as it takes away from the poor and gives to the rich. And to point out that the government really isn't all about helping the poor people like they like to portray themselves.

I'm one of those, but I think the redistribution wealth should be used to assist the working poor and those trying to better their situation. Not able bodied individuals who want the gov't to support them just because.
