ATTN: Doug Wilson
Gratz on the demise of the sharks. Flame me all you want for saying this but it's true. He essentially ruined everything Dean Lombardi set up there. He has traded most of his top prospects/early picks and opted for veterans. How did that work this year? Now for all those Heatley to SJS rumors, let me point out how this really won't work for them. Currently the sharks have 9 forwards, 7 defenceman, and 1 goalie under contract with only 899K to fill out at LEAST 3 more forwards and a goalie. The LAST thing the sharks need is a guy with a cap hit of 7.5 million who has requested a trade TWICE. Granted the ATL trade was SEMI justified (not by me at all means) but now he wants out of OTT after just signing a nice shiny big contract. The two rumored deals going around are Cheechoo, Ehrhoff and a pick for heater but OTT wants Ehrhoff, Michalak and a pick. The Cheechoo and Ehrhoff deal will NOT happen by any means for many reasons. First, the Sens have said they do NOT want Cheechoo and secondly that deal only clears 6.1 million in cap and adds 7.5 which would push the sharks over the cap AND force them to sign another D man to replace Ehrhoff. Now the Michalak and Ehrhoff deal clears 7.433 and takes in 7.5 so TECHNICALLY that deal works but then again the sharks would have to sign 5 players instead of 4. What makes sense for the sharks? You have to trade Marleau. Yes he was your captain and yes he had good stats this year but his cap hit is 6.3 million and it was clear he really didn't have the best leadership for the team. If the sharks trade Marleau for picks and prospects, that will help them rebuild since its not like they're a very young team. Blake is 39 and will be retiring soon and by trading away your top D prospect in Wishart. Petrecki, the sharks top defensive prospect now is at Boston College and who knows how long he will stay there. Their next best prospect is Joslin who by no means can measure up to Blake. Moving marleau would free up 6.3 million. What can they do with that? They can fill out their 3rd and 4th line plus sign a goalie to back up Nabby. It also gives them cap room to resign Setoguchi, who will need a new contract next year and you KNOW he will get a big upgrade in pay. The next move Wilson would need to make is to move cheechoo. Take a look at these numbers. in 05-06, cheech's best year he had 56 goals. Since then? 36, 23, 12 in the next 3 respective seasons. There is no way shape or form you can justify paying him 3 million to score 12 goals. He has another year on his contract after this year before becoming a UFA and it just makes sense to move him now or just buy him out and clear cap space for someone worth the money. Two other huge moves that Wilson made were trading for Boyle and signing Blake. Blake is a great player, a surefire HOFer but is at the end of his career and making a rather large 3.5 million, which was a pay cut from last year. Boyle on the other hand is making 6.67 million a year. Yes great defenceman but having him meant giving up Wishart, Carle, and a 1st round pick. Worth it? In the short run yes. Long run no. Boyle is 32, by no means a young guy. Wishart is 21 and could end up having a great career. Carle is only 24 and has sadly been moved around a lot. He could develop into a pretty good D man too. That 1st rounder could have added a quality prospect to a prospect pool that is lacking. So ask yourself. Was the Boyle deal REALLY worth it? Taking all of this into consideration, do you really think Doug Wilson is doing a good job in San Jose?

As long as San Jose keeps losing, I think he's doing a great job!

This. but if I were a sharks fan (which i NEVER will be), you have to wonder how much longer he keeps his job

Well, he got rid of the coach last year. No one left to blame but himself.

Wilson IMO is a regular season coach. He does great during regular season but come playoffs he just can't hang. I've gotta think that if Wilson goes then McLellan would too

Hey at least the sharks have made the playoffs for the last few years. More than what we can say our teams have done.

I don't know that he's done a great job.... their Cap situation makes it obvious that they have issues.
Cheecho signed that contract after scoring 56 goals. How could they not sign him?
The Boyle trade, IMO, was a good one. Matt Carle is a decent dman. Has he done anything to make you think he'll ever be a legit top pairing guy? I don't think he has. If he's a solid #4 or #5 guy in your blue line depth, who cares then? Wishart might turn out to be good, he might turn out to be a stiff, and never play more than a handful of NHL games. Same can be said for the 1st round pick. (Only 1/3 1st round picks ever get a 2nd NHL contract).
I'd take Boyle over that group of 'assets' any day. He *IS* a star player. You know what you're getting with him.
Now.... I think it's pretty obvious that the Sharks have been going for it, the last couple of years. Wilson has failed in putting together a team that could win a Cup. My guess is they've got another year, maybe two, before the team goes on a serious decline (will be hovering in the 10th - 7th spots, instead of top 4). If this current core of players is going to win a championship, it will have to be no later than the 2010-11 season. Can they do it? I don't know.
Ultimately, I think Doug Wilson should be judged on weather or not he can deliver a Cup. If the Sharks were to win the Cup this year, and then be awful for the next 5 years (due to overpaid vets, and no good prospects) I'd still call that a success. You can't win the title every year... so when you've got a legit chance, I think you have to go for broke, and give it your best shot.

yes but you forget the fact that both our teams are rebuilding
yeah the cheechoo deal cam right after the 56 goal year but he hadnt proven anything until that point and it was only one great year. not hard to score 56 as an NHLer when you get set up for every goal perfectly by joe thornton and all you have to do is tap the puck in. Carle will be more likely a 3-4 d man on a decent team. Wishart I agree could be a bust or could be great but he was really the sharks only decent prospect and the 1st rounder could have helped for the future. I say if the sharks don't win it this year, which they wont, then its time to rebuild

im a sharks fan and i have to agree. i dont have a clue what he is doing. im pretty much expecting to lose some player that i like on the team (cheechoo, marleau, ehrhoff) just because we are backed into a wall. there aint much to say but what has been said. we have spots to fill and we dont have the money to do it.
