There Great and all but he going have to watch Copyrights if he starts selling them . I know of two artist that got nailed for this and the same goes for Customs Cards

Using the images and logos of teams in order to gain a profit without expressed written consent can lead to a lawsuit. It is called copyright infringement. For example, the Michael Jordan image is from a famous photograph which also uses the image of the Chicago Bulls as well as Jordan's image. He would need permission from all three entities in order to duplicate that image. He would need Jordan's permission, the photographer's permission, and the Bulls permission. He might even need the NBA Players Union's permission as well.
If the NBAPA, Jordan, etc. find out he has made a profit they can go after him legally. He can contact a lawyer for more detailed information which is recommended.

How do the other artists sell them, I can guarantee you that they don't go and get permission from all of those places.

Other artists might commissioned by the players or have consent from MLB or MLBPA. For example, if you were to come out with a baseball card design and start selling these cards you would be responsible to pay royalties to MLB and MLBPA. Now that Topps has exclusive rights for MLB, they can go after you now as well if they so desired.
I don't know about other artists nor do I make decisions for the NFL, MLB, their unions or anyone else. I'm just giving a little advice, it would be wise to seek out the advice of a lawyer to clarify copyright laws and all the other legalese.
