Card shows want a forutne for cards

I went to a card show this weekend. It was a really small one at my local mall. Only maybe ten guys set up.

They are asking crazy prices for things. Is it like that all the time? I asked about a Pat White Bowman Sterling GU card #ed to 749 I think and he wanted $30 for it. I said man that is really high. I don't even think it books for that. I didn't know what it booked for but it books for $12. He said he could give it to me for $25. I said no thanks. I am watching one on Ebay now that I will get for less than $8 it looks like. It is #ed to 199.

I did buy a Pat White Topps Chrome base from another guy and he wanted $15 for it. I gave him $8 but that was still over BV.

I used to like going to those but not anymore. Is it like that everywhere? I thought at first it was because WVU is about five hours from here and everyone is WVU fans but is was all cards and not just Pat White.

I can't know or remember what each card is but most collectors have a general idea of what a card should go for.

Guessing before I looked it up, I thought the Pat White may book around $15. Sure enough, it is $12. I thought maybe the TC would be about $5 or $6 and it is $6.

Another guy wanted $60 for a Ronnie Brown GU multi color. It was a Fleer I think but was not #ed. I thought that one may be about $20 but I don't remember exactly what it was so I can't look it up.

Yah i know how you feel, i went to a show at my local mall a few weeks back and i couldn't believe it. They were asking full bv for cards that usually go for 1/4 bv and cards that usually went fot 1/2 bv they wanted 2x bv.
Now there were several sellers selling base/inserts/parallels for 4/$1 or 5/$1 which is how i got a bunch of peyton manning for pc, but there were still several sellers who were asking for $5 or more EACH for inserts/parallels that i had just got for 5/$1.
I just got into collecting in january and looked forward to these shows every month, but after the past two shows i certainly wont make a point to go to any more. If i happen to go to the mall and the show is going on ill look around, otherwise i could care less, i'll just stick to trading and buying stuff off of ebay.

I guess i have been lucky. The shows that i go to around here do have some of the most outlandish prices but also alot of the 2$ Gu'd and autos. I got a jake long rookie auto #/50 at a recent show for 4 bucks. I was happy. Hope you can find good shows they are always fun to go to.

I hate card shows, but always go to them... Some sellers are crazy, but I try to buy from the same people over and over, that way we build a relationship of sorts. I will NOT pay book value, when I can get something I want on here, or ebay for 1/2 the price.

I don't get to go to many, the closest ones are an hour away...but I can usually find some good deals. The last one I went to, I got a nice lot of good RCs (Ronnie Brown Gridiron Gear, Matt Schaub Reflections, stuff like that...around $10-20 BV each) for $1 each....I was very happy about that. From my experience, if you're looking at their display cases, those are what they perceive as the hot cards and are going to want a good price for them. But, like Welker said, if you go through their boxes you can usually find much better deals...so it just depends on what you're looking for.

There's usually one guy that I buy from at the local shows cause I get such good deals. He buys collections, pulls the super high stuff and just blows the rest out. I'll go through and get a stack of 75 to 100 for $10 to $20. I'll spend another $10 at the show and call it good. Nothing compares to eBay prices so it's impossible to find deals like you see online.

In Ohio, the smaller show singles go for 50% of BV.
