WNBA slowly becoming more popular
The WNBA has slowly started to become more popular. There are only 13 teams, compared to a high of 16 in 2002, but average attendance has seen an increase over the last 3 seasons, up 3 percent this season compared to last. Sales of merchandise are also up, by 10 percent, compared to 2008. Ratings on ESPN2 are still low, but there have been increases amoung children and teens, and three male age groups. The WNBA is in the first year of an 8-year deal with ESPN and ABC. They have had 3 new corporate marketing partners sign on, and have had 4 renew their deals, including shoe-giant Nike. The Los Angeles Sparks and Phoenix Mercury have also sold sponsorships for their game jerseys.
So, all in all, I doubt the WNBA will be going bankrupt anytime soon, like previously rumored, thankfully!

Nathan, theres a reason the percentage is up, they are giving away the tickets! at my LCS, theres stacks upon stacks of fliers you can fill out to get free seats, you can even get lower level seats free...
the percentage may be up, but that doesn't involve them making more money..
Keep in mind the Shock are one of th best teams in the WNBA and they can't even sell ticketsHidden Content

But at least there is some interest in the WNBA...people aren't just going to go because it's free if they don't like it...

I went because it was free and I didn't like it...
sorry but the WNBA is SO boring, its almost like a layup drill, there is rarely any jump shots, and this happened at all THREE games i went at! Never again will i go to a game or watch one

What's wrong with layups? You, and the majority of other people who don't like the WNBA, simply don't like it because it's not flashy...right? I expect to go to the circus if I want to see crazy stunts. ;-)

Wouldnt average attendance go up if the teams with the worst attendance figures are gone now? I do a lot of things that I dont like simply because they are free, or highly discounted. Its why I go to a lot of NIU baseball games with the family. It makes my wife happy because we're out of the house and doing something as a family. I'm sure there are a lot of people in this economy who cant afford an NBA game so they go to a WNBA game instead. And if that's what it takes to get some new fans, then I'm all for it. Still wouldnt be surprised if NBA owners decide to pull the plug, though.

Because they are uncontested layups, they go back and down the court doing a layup drill, i don't want to see a three point contest but i'd like to see some defense and some real shots taken..

I think the sponsoring turned some of the fans away. Who wants to see an ad of Lifelock on the player's jerseys? I wouldn't, I would rather see the team logo first and then a smaller ad on their jerseys. And besides if I want to see sponsors I'd watch Nascar.

Yes, and it has - 3% over last year when the Atlanta Dream were still in the league.
I do a lot of things that I dont like simply because they are free, or highly discounted. Its why I go to a lot of NIU baseball games with the family. It makes my wife happy because we're out of the house and doing something as a family. I'm sure there are a lot of people in this economy who cant afford an NBA game so they go to a WNBA game instead. And if that's what it takes to get some new fans, then I'm all for it.
That's cool! I'd like to go to games, but aside from high school football, there isn't anything nearby that I know of...

I believe only 7 of the 13 teams are owned by the NBA still...
