Disney To Acquire Marvel Entertainment For $4 Billion
Disney To Acquire Marvel Entertainment For $4 Billion
The Walt Disney Company has agreed to acquire Marvel Entertainment in a stock and cash transaction, the companies announced this morning...
...Under the deal, which has been approved by the boards of both companies, Disney will acquire ownership of Marvel including its portfolio of over 5,000 Marvel characters. That portfolio includes many familiar names like Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor.
Says Disney CEO Robert A. Iger in a statement: “We believe that adding Marvel to Disney’s unique portfolio of brands provides significant opportunities for long-term growth and value creation.”
Ike Perlmutter, Marvel’s CEO, added: “Disney is the perfect home for Marvel’s fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses. This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney’s tremendous global organization and infrastructure around the world.”
Just when Marvel had opened their own studio and started producing quality films...this could be good or bad, probably a little of both.

Good news for Marvel marketing. Bad news for Marvel movies, since I doubt any of them would be rated "R" anymore. It's pretty much going to be rated "PG-13" and under.

They wanted to get the little boys front- Marvel they already got the little girls with their princess stuff.
Wish I had stock in Marvel right now. Now they have the backing to produce any Marvel movie they see fit. Good thing Punisher was already made.

People people people, if anything this is good. Gives Marvel more resources to make movies, and just because they are now owned by Disney doesn't mean that the movies wont be PG-13 or R. Disney has many different divisions and produces all types of movies. Miramax for instance which produced Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, Clerks etc, is owned by Disney.

Most Marvel movies have sucked IMO, i'm looking at this from the comic book aspect. Disney better not get in the way of those

They are not going to get in the way of anything. They are just going to be making more money and Marvel now has more money to make better movies

But comic book movies are a very tricky prospect. More resources don't necessarily mean a better movie. A lot of people (not saying you, I mean industry types) think as long as you pack in cool special effects and lots of action, it's a good comic book movie. People don't realize how discerning comic book fans are and that they do actually pay attention to story and plot development.
If they keep Marvel Studios as a separate entity and let them do their jobs with more resources and no interference, yeah, should be a good thing. If they try to absorb Marvel and put out Marvel movies with another studio and just go for blockbusters, it won't be good.
