Fair Sale Prices
Hi guys and gals!
I'm just curious how everyone comes up with their sale prices. I like to think that I'm quite fair, but sometimes I wonder if I'm asking too much or too little!
I use the basic 50% of BV. If no BV (N/A) then average of recent sales (on the bay) - all USD including delivery.
Does this seem fair? When a player such as Crosby or Ovie, etc. is involved, should the same standard rules apply, or should one look for a premium - i.e. 50-75% BV?
I'm not looking to change up any agreements or deals I've put forth, just wondering what everyone thinks?
And before you get on me about the 50% - remeber that's with delivery and I do go down in % with multiple cards.
I guess my real question is, if you're going 50/BV. do you change that up for more collectible players?
Feedback and thoughts are genuinely wanted!

BTW - if you were quoted, quote stands regardless of this thread!
Boy I hope I'm not a ™™™™™™!

That seems pretty fair to me. That is about the price standard that I go buy, however I rely more on ebay rather than Beckett (mainly because I don't subscribe anymore). I do however ask a premium on "hot" cards

Ebay, Ebay, Ebay.....It only makes sense to use past sales as a reference point when selling. Many cards will sell for 10% of BV, whereas some may even sell for more than their repsective beckett value would indicate. So its completely counter-intuitive to use beckett in any way. The only useful purpose of the beckett priceguides these days is to get a general overview of the range of prices that certain cards go for. However, when selling a particular card, the only logical means of extracting a selling price is to refer to Ebay.

When it comes to more common items I generally start off with 50%BV - it's a practice I see at just about every card show I've ever been to. If I'm buying multiples I'll see if I can get the seller to knock off a few extra bucks as well, and most are happy to do it. If somebody wants to buy a bunch of stuff off me, I'll do the same thing. It helps make the sale, I get a few extra bucks, my partner gets some more cards, and I clear out stuff I don't really want anyways. Everybody wins. If somebody wants to haggle, I'm all for it - I loves me some good bartering.
When it comes to the hot cards, I tend to do a bit of extra research in large part because I also collect one of the hot guys in the hobby (yes people are back on the Carey bandwagon once again) - if I know that a certain card is selling for X on the Bay and I see the card for sale at X-10 I'm all over it. Generally if I have a card that I'm willing to sell what I'll do is list it at X+10 and offer free shipping, along with best offer. If somebody wants it, great. If not, no big deal.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Completed Listings is the only way to go IMO. You simply can't expect 50% of BV for a card that usually only sells for 10% or so. Same thing with cards that are being chased after. You'd really be doing yourself a disservice if you sold it for 50% BV.
When I buy from message boarders, I use completed listings and typically go the lower end of a bunch of sales (not THE lowest though) minus a little bit of Ebay fees. Both save a few bucks in the process.

eBay, for sure. It's really simple:
If I can get a card for 25% of BV on eBay (on a regular basis) then why would I pay you 50%???
At the same time..... if a card sells for 75% on eBay.... why should you only get 50%.
Check eBay completed listings. It's the absolute best way to gauge the market.

I think 50% of BV is fair...and thats what I would LIKE to sell my cards at, but it never happens. Too often people want eBay prices, which makes sense I suppose :)

Beckett priceguides were much more relevant 10-15 years ago when sellers and buyers were left in the dark with regards to general completed sales prices for a particular card. Beckett was assigned to do the dirty work and investigate for us. Today, however, the sales information we require is at our fingertips (Ebay), so neglecting or dismissing "real-world sale value" in favor of Beckett's unstable and often absurd guidelines is completely foolish and borderline ignorant.
I actually cringe when I see people applying the whole "50% of BV" thing. haha.Last edited by SenatorsFan; 08-31-2009 at 02:38 PM.

In my opinion you dont even need a becket to determine what things should sell for.
The good people at beckett has WAAAAY too many things to keep track of for them to always get prices right.
The only way I get sale prices is from ebay ( or knowledge of what I paid for the card ). Why would someone pay more because its 50% of full BV, if they and the rest of the collectors can pay 25% of BV on certain items on ebay. On the other hand, if a card sells closer to 75 - 90% BV, theres no way im giving it up for 50% =P.Last edited by canucksfan007; 08-31-2009 at 05:18 PM.
