Sounds like Daddy Obama wants to do what Parents should be doing, in encouraging their own children. We also have to remember that there have been dictators that, did the same thing.

This is why its different from Bush, Reagan, Clinton, etc....
" in advance of the address, the Department of Education has offered educators "classroom activities" to coincide with Obama's message.
Students in grades pre-K-6, for example, are encouraged to "write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals."
Teachers are also given guidance to tell students to "build background knowledge about the president of the United States by reading books about presidents and Barack Obama."
During the speech, "teachers can ask students to write down key ideas or phrases that are important or personally meaningful."
For grades 7-12, the Department of Education suggests teachers prepare by excerpting quotes from Obama's speeches on education for their students to contemplate -- and ask as questions such as "Why does President Obama want to speak with us today? How will he inspire us? How will he challenge us?"
Activities suggested for after the speech include asking students "what resonated with you from President Obama's speech? What lines/phrase do you remember?"
Its not that big of a deal to me, but I can understand people being weary. Check the next page on this forum for the story of the teenage Global Warming activist.

I for the life of me, dont understand why this is a big deal.
How can we become better students and what can we do to improve this country?
Teachers are also given guidance to tell students to "build background knowledge about the president of the United States by reading books about presidents and Barack Obama."
Learn about the past presidents.
During the speech, "teachers can ask students to write down key ideas or phrases that are important or personally meaningful."
What in the speech resonated with you.

Are we at Passover? Ma nishtana ha lyla ha zeh mikkol hallaylot?
Activities suggested for after the speech include asking students "what resonated with you from President Obama's speech? What lines/phrase do you remember?"
Once again, what stuck with you?
Why the fudge is there outrage? The melon farmers who are getting upset need to calm the fudge down.

I don't see the issue with this at all. Also, I think it's great that they would actually have the students actually listen to the speech and then answer subjective questions about it to express their personal views about what he actually said to them. Seems like a great activity and could start some nice debates within the classroom as well as open up the minds within the class to see how different people feel about the speech.
Obama is a great speaker so maybe he can motivate some kids into taking a little more interest in their own education.

im not even saying I am against it, but exactly how is "How did president Obama inspire you?" subjective?

Here is the speech, it was released early since President Obama's motives were getting questioned from the right. It seems like exactly the kind of message that we need to be sending:

Hokey at points (to be expected), but that's the type of speech I was hoping it would be.

I'm in 7th grade, me answering this question implies that I was inspired by Mr. Obama, therefore I can't answer this question.
Wait, maybe I'll say he inspired me to make sure the American people actually know what's going to happen when they elect someone.
But they had nobody good to vote for this year, so I can't really complain too much.

I find this typical of the Democrats:
http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/op...-57694347.html
The controversy over President Obama's speech to the nation's schoolchildren will likely be over shortly after Obama speaks today at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. But when President George H.W. Bush delivered a similar speech on October 1, 1991, from Alice Deal Junior High School in Washington DC, the controversy was just beginning. Democrats, then the majority party in Congress, not only denounced Bush's speech -- they also ordered the General Accounting Office to investigate its production and later summoned top Bush administration officials to Capitol Hill for an extensive hearing on the issue.
