Venting: Oh My!
*Please do not take me too seriously I'm just Venting:
I am sick and tired of looking through people's buckets and finding something I want then looking at their wantlist and seeing this:
Crosby\Ovechkin\Malkin\Price\Toews\Kane\Mason\Gret zky\Lemieux\Orr\Howe
I mean why don't people have this:
"I don't care what card it is, just as long as its worth money and I can sell it real easy"
Is there any love for the game anymore? Because I remembered a time in this hobby where people collected sets, discussed the players and stats on the back of the cards, Actually enjoyed the hobby.
I collect Patrice Bergeron because he's my favorite Boston Bruin and I'm a die hard Bruins fan. I see people on here with that above list of players, and a Toronto Maple Leaf flag as their Avatar. Where's the leafs collection?
Is it just me or are people so caught up with Money and Value, that they've forgotton what this hobby is all about?
I also trade in a facebook group and I see people who don't even know the players they're collecting. I mean people, c'mon... Its one thing to have your own card store, and you are buying and selling to make a Living, because quite frankly, I'd love to do that as my Career, but are people so caught up with the almighty dollar that they forgot the actual Game itself?

I agree with you, but would at least caution that there are lots of true collectors out there that use the mega-stars like on the bucket list you gave as an example as a means to pay for their PC's. For me, for example, I am always looking for those guys, because they sell or make good tradebait which, in turn, I use to build my Roberto Luongo master set.
There are a lot of gamblers that do this strictly for a chance to win some $ in a pack (and let's face it, that's all it is, a spin of the reels) but those guys have always been around. Except instead of collecting 90 Premier Jagr RC's they're shooting for 1 of 1 quadruple patch, game-used jock, octo auto, hand-numbered, gold plated, silver lined mega-hits. :-)

Maybe I'm a little Jealous that I don't have the fantastic trade bait like most and I have to struggle for each Bergeron card I get... lol.

Of all the vents and all the rants I've read over the years, this is the first time I've read something like this and I think you've made some good points.
There are a lot of people out there who only want the cards for re-sale and whose wantlists are $$$ or might as well be.
In part though, I am thankful for some of them because they often parlay those cash sales into more box breaks which means I can find more of what I'm looking for as well. I just can't work out a trade with any of them.
In any case, don't get too boiled up over them. There's lots of good traders out there who have actual wantlists and collect players they like because they are familiar with them.
BTw, what facebook group are you involved in?
I've also got these two Bergeron cards:

PLMK if you're interested. WTTF "Crosby\Ovechkin\Malkin\Price\Toews\Kane\Mason\Gre tzky\Lemieux\Orr\Howe"... J/k
Actually interested in anything from my wantlist or send me your trade list and I'm sure we can work something out.
Cheers,
reoddai

I'm an admin in "Canadian Hockey Card Traders" Its a close knit community of traders. We went through great pains to get the safety of the site up, but its like clockwork now. A lot of great traders. You should check it out!
I'm not mad at them, it's just disappointing when you find a card in someone's bucket that they have no interest in, and because you have nothing high end or on that above list, you can't get it. And I'm the easiest going trader around...
I'm actually at work Reoddai, I can't see photobuckets due to security limitations, which cards are they?

I totally agree with you. Trading is really tough...especially if you want lower end stuff the other end wants Crosby/Ovechkin/Howe etc. I have some smaller pc's I do for fun such as Arturs Irbe and Ron Tugnutt. But I can't ever work out a deal because all they want is high end players, so those pc's are starting to die because I can't add to my collection's.
I've never been in to the big name players...I have always found it more fun to collect lower end guys because you can build a nice collection for cheap. As a kid I collected Fiset, Storr, Ray Whitney, Robitaille, Gilmour, Tugnutt.... It was fun and wasn't about dollar signs.
Now with the cost of packs and singles, I've started to go back to my old ways and collect lesser known players such as John Mitchell and I've found enjoyment in the hobby once again.

Good thread and solid points that I myself and griped about over the years.
I guess I am one of the few "outcasts" then.
Bring me the Rob Blake/Forsberg/Kopitar/Kings cards I want and you can have all my high end cards of Crosby/Roy/Gretz/etc. I'll even trade Cup cards of those dudes for older, tough to find cards on my wantlist.
< braces for flood of PM's >

If I see those wants in a persons sig I don't even look at their buckets. I don't want to find a card in thier bucket and not be able to trade for it. I would rather not know what card they have that I might want or need.

I pretty much agree with you on all fronts.
Quite frankly, I don't see the point of being in this hobby, unless you're doing it for fun. The fact of the matter is, 99% of us are going to take a loss in actual money, over the long haul.
I get that there are some people who do this for a living, and they need to operate at a profit.
The only thing I would add to what you said, is that there have to be some exceptions. Maybe I've got 1 or 2 PC guys that I collect, and I've got a couple of sets that I'm working on. If I've got a card that you want.... and you've got nothing from my wants...... the Ovy/Crosby/Gretz/Orr/Howe type stuff.... for a lot of people..... is the only other stuff they're interested in. Why? Because if you can't get them something they need, they do want something that's easy to trade or easy to sell, so they can turn it into something they want.

I so agree with you Ranfordfan. There's also a budget difference as well. Some of us only have a few bucks each week to be spending on cards. Others, have the means to be buying hundreds of dollars in cards. Which is why we have the sets like "The Cup" and UD "Black" where its High Risk-High Reward.
For me, I'd like to have the vast majority of the sets abolished and stick with the following:
Set Builders and RC's:
Upper Deck Series
OPC
Ultra
Game Used:
The Cup (For the insane)
Ultimate
Autos:
SP Authentic
The rest, I believe is a waste. SPGU at 30 bucks a pack is a bit much when you're pulling a Sesito white swatch valued at 10 bucks. I know Victory and MVP are mostly for the younger collectors, but UD series isn't overly expensive, either is Ultra.
Anyone else agree?
