Summit Show in Edmonton: One Person's Review

Hello all. I was originally going to go Sunday but snuck in yesterday at 4 pm when the door opened. It's a huge venue with insanely wide walking spaces between the rows of tables and it's very bright. Those are the positives.

The vast majority of dealers had vintage cards and many others were selling jerseys, so if you collect those then this show is for you.

If, like me, you're looking for more recent cards, then there's very little to look at. It took me exactly 20 minutes to cruise the entire show to check for my interests and I found none. I was looking for the new Cup and the Programme of Excellence cards in particular, and only two dealers with back to back tables had any of the new Cup (very little). There were a couple of other tables with Cup from the last few years and a couple of tables with more recent hockey wax. There were a couple of dealers set up, who had set up at the previous Bossa show in Edmonton last month and they were among the dealers who had newer wax.

Attendance was limited: there were about 20 people lined up to get in when the door first opened but perhaps that's understandable since most people were still at work and more will likely attend today and Sunday.

The admission cost is $10 ($10.50 through Ticketmaster) for a single day and parking was $10 for me but I'm told it goes up to $12/day for the remaining two days.

There were some old displays of vintage memorabilia and three people had an impressive display of old jerseys, altho' the one person we spoke with wasn't really interested in selling the Tony Exposito jersey my friend wanted...until he'd replaced it with something better.

The Bossa Show last month had more of what I was interested in, but again that's based upon what I collect. Perhaps in future it would be nice to have one large show in Edmonton where all dealers who attended both shows could come together, rather than split them into two separate shows with nearby dates...

I wish they had decent card shows in the Bay Area on a more frequent basis. On the other hand, if they cost $20 for admission and parking then it better be the National.

Parking there is crazy expensive and i dont know why lol. you can drive down the road 5 minutes to a train station and pay $2.50 and jump on the train

I was there all day Saturday and Sunday. I had a great time as I always do at card shows whether it is an Expo, National, Bossa or, and now, Summit.

The Paul Coffey lineup today was thick. He was signing from 1:00 till 4:00 and at 1:30 the line was too long for me to wait. I checked again at 2:30 and it was still too long for me to stand there. I went back at around 3:30 and was finally able to walk right up, have a chat and picture with Paul and get my auto. He was pretty funny and caught me of guard when I walked up he asked me if I was with the band.

Having PSA/DNA there was awesome. And from what I could see when I was at their booth filling out my submission forms and drooling over Sean Broderick's collection, they were busy authenticating autos on site and helping collectors fill out submission forms.

The other "big deal" in my opinion was that Bobby Burrell was there offering his essential hobby book for a paltry $20 and showing his OPC display. If you don't know, Bobby is the premier expert of not only everything OPC, but everything hockey collectible from 1910 through 1989. At his booth he had 4 short videos on the history of OPC. I sat there today and watched them. The coolest part was a video of the actual production and packaging of 1974-75 OPC in the factory! No joke! It was awesome to go back in time and "witness" that process.

I will also add that the entry fee did not bother me. If you can get over the parking fee, entry was $10. Whatever. The venue was the best I've ever been in and I've been in them all.

While there weren't as many card vendors as there are at Bossa and Expo, those that were there were all in good moods and were happy to shoot the poop.

I would say that this show was a success as it was certainly something to build on going forward. If the "anchor" exhibitors show up again next year, the show will only be better.

The professionalism was second to none that I've seen. The promoters were dressed in sports jackets and were on the floor the whole time. All announcements were easy to hear and were short and to the point. There were no unnecessary announcements.

I walked around with Marcel's (Mack26) camera today and either he or I will post the pics over the next couple days.

I also managed to pick up game used Hawerchuk and Steen sticks. Big thanks to Matt (theslurpee on HI) for letting me know they were even at the show. When he took me over to them, the Hawerchuk was put aside for another collector. I was very disappointed. But the vendor seemed hesitant so I asked him if he would ask the other collector to let me buy them and the other collector said "only if he (me) makes a stupid offer". So I did on the condition that he throw in the Thomas Steen stick. He did.

In my mind it wasn't all that high of a price so I came away very happy. Now I just need to send them to UD so they can make me a couple Property ofs.
