question about trading inserts for autos
I've been collecting for years... but I'm pretty "green" when it comes to online trading. Sure, I traded a lot online 15 years ago on AOL's message boards, but times are different. Back then, I dealt with base, rookies, parallels, and inserts (okay I know there were autos, but I didn't have many and don't remember trading for them).
So, my question is... Is there a general standard to trading inserts for autographs and/or memorabilia cards?
I'm asking because it's pretty obvious collectors (including myself) value rookies, autographs and gu cards more than inserts, base, or parallels. At least it seems obvious to me, through my experiences on SCF.
So, what's a reasonable trade ratio? I've had people say it's book value for book value (I'm not even trying to get started on the whole Beckett value isn't real... Yes, I believe in Ebay value... but sometimes it's just easier to use Beckett as a guide). Other people want double in trade (ex. $10 auto = $20 insert).
Personally, I usually go with the flow. I feel that it depends on the players involved and the type of card. For example, if there's a Devin Setoguchi parallel that I really want, I don't mind trading it straight up for an auto. However, I personally wouldn't trade an auto for a Jari Kurri parallel straight up.
Another thing I'm curious about is why people get so upset over offers. I've had people tell me they're offended, because I want too much in trade. I've had people get upset, because I tell them "no thanks" (b/c I think they want too much in trade). It's a hobby... we're in it for the fun. EVERYONE has the right to say "no" and I respect that.
Sorry about the long post... simply put... do you have a trade ratio that you use when trading autographs, rookies, or game-used for inserts, base, or parallels?
Thanks in advance... and btw... if you're one of the people I offended in the past... I apologize again... no hard feelings. I'm in this hobby to have fun, not to cause drama.

to me it depends on what i am getting insert wise. if it's buccaneers or patriots that i collect i dont have a problem but i usually wont trade autos for inserts as trade bait. unless they are super low #ed like /25 or lower. unfortunately it doesnt seem like anyone cares for inserts. i like em' heck some are cooler then autos. but when i trade autos for inserts it's usually to the auto guys favor. i dont think there is a set ratio i use. maybe 1.5X - 2X bv that i give up in inserts.

That's pretty much what I do. If you're in the card business for a while, then you should be able to make a good judgment of how much inserts you would want for an auto or how much inserts would you want to get back in return for an auto. One of the most common solution to all problems is to go with your gut.

It all depends on the inserts offered. If I really need it, I'll take it. I don't use BV unless it is something expensive or something like that

As long as both parties are good with the trade anything goes in my opinion. I've traded GU and Auto's for base and parallels of players I collect. I've only had a few deals where after I thought about it I kicked myself for pulling the trigger.

Both people are happy with the trade = perfect.
Cards are cards, doesn't matter what's in them on or them - they are cardboard (or plastic products) with ink on them.
I give no greater value to a game used scrap than an insert.
Base cards...I'd still trade a random Auto card I didn't want for a handful of base I could actually use - after all, I can turn those into IP autos without much effort.
So, the short if it, no they aren't worth any more.
