When was the first year that UD started making the Young Guns insert sets?
Just wondering when Upper Deck decided to start the ever popular Young Guns rookie card insert sets.
Wondering if they made one for Simon Gagne's rookie year, although I have a feeling they didn't start making them till later.....

They've been making them since the beginning, I think. I remember some from 90-91, and 91-92.

They've been there since the beginning in 1990-91.. guys like Bobby Holik and Sergei Fedorov... although they used to miss good players and still do... for example Mike Green.

It think it was either 99-00 or 00-01 that they started Short Printing them (making them more like inserts) though. Somoene else can probably do a better job confirming that. It was during those dark years..... when I stopped collecting.
For sure though.... the term 'Young Guns' has been around since their first set in 1990-91.

Actually 98-99 UD started to short print cards in the regular set, but didn't use the "Young Guns" title as short prints until 99-00.
Before that the Young Guns were a subset from 90-91 to 92-93, and had the same print run as the regular set.Searching for: Jagr, Palffy, Stumpel, and Boyd

Oh yeah and to answer that question, his RC #411 is in the 97-98 year. Regular print run, but UD was calling this sub-set "Program of Excellence". It was exclusively geared towards Canadian National Juniors from the 94-95 to 98-99 production years.
I hope this helps, and if you need a Gagne rookie. I can help you out there too.

The Young Guns sets were also an insert redemption set in the 96-97 and 97-98 Collector's Choice issues produced by Upper Deck.
