"The California Kid" is probably taking some time off to let his hands heal, while training for his return to the WEC ring around January.

Yeah, Urijah broke both his hands in his rematch with Mike Brown a little while back, and ended up having surgery on them. He healed rediculously quickly though, and is expected to make a late 2009/early 2010 return to the WEC, most likely with a #1 contendership fight, then another battle with the Mike Brown/Jose Aldo winner

Great to hear he hasn't quit...

I'm assuming WEC is a different organization than UFC, If so has the UFC ever tried to recruit him? Or has he ever been with the UFC?

The WEC is actually owned by Zuffa, who owns the UFC. The WEC features weight classes that are below the UFC Lightweight. If Urijah was to move up in weight, he could potentially vie for a UFC spot, but given his height and the fact that he's about as big as he can possibly be, its unlikely. Also the prospects of having to get through someone like B.J. Penn don't bode well.

    Here's an update

Varner vs. Henderson, Assuncao vs. Faber official for WEC 46 in Sacramento, Calif.

by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Nov 02, 2009 at 5:40 pm ET
The long-awaited return of WEC lightweight champ Jamie Varner (16-2 MMA, 4-0 WEC) is now official, and the Arizona Combat Sports product meets interim champ Benson Henderson (10-1 MMA, 3-0 WEC) at WEC 46.

The WEC today officially announced the lightweight unification bout as well as a featherweight contest between former champ Urijah Faber (22-3 MMA, 7-2 WEC) and top contender Raphael Assuncao (14-1 MMA, 2-0 WEC) at the recently rumored event.

WEC 46 takes place Jan. 10 at ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif.

Varner has been sidelined since his January contest with Donald Cerrone. Although Varner won a controversial technical split-decision over Cerrone, the lightweight champ suffered a hand injury that has proven slow to heal.

Varner carries a five-fight win streak into the bout and has a perfect 4-0 mark in the WEC.

Varner's extended absence forced the WEC to institute an interim lightweight belt, and Henderson claimed the title in a stunning unanimous-decision win over Cerrone at WEC 43 in October. The results of the "Fight of the Year" candidate were hotly contested, but Henderson walked away with the belt.

Henderson owns a nine-fight win streak, and seven of the victories have via stoppage.

Assuncao has earned six-straight wins, including two decision victories in the WEC. The Brazilian submission ace defeated Yves Jabouin at WEC 43 in October after besting Jameel Massouh at WEC 40 in April.

Assuncao's lone career loss came to former WEC bantamweight Jeff Curran.

One of the WEC's most popular fighters, Faber is currently mired in a 1-2 slump. Both losses came at the hands of current featherweight champion Mike Brown.

A Sacramento-based fighter, Faber has headlined the WEC's previous two visits to ARCO Arena. "WEC 41: Brown vs. Faber II" in June and "WEC 34: Faber vs. Pulver" in June 2008 stand as the organization's two most-attended events.

Ticket information for the event is expected to be released shortly.
