Ernie Harwell
Today I wrote Mr. Ernie Harwell a nice "thank you" letter for all his great years of being an excellent broadcaster. I told him how much respect and admiration I have for his work in the business and that I was a 2nd generation fan of his. I let him know how as a kid, my Dad told me of hearing him in 1951 make the call of Bobby Thomson's homer ("The shot heard around the world"). Mr. Harwell was always a very good TTM'er that signed a number of items for me (and probably many of you).
On September 3, 2009, it was revealed that Ernie Harwell had been diagnosed with an incurable cancer of the bile duct. He made an appearance in Detroit recently and told reporters that he was not in any pain to date. I just wanted him to know how much I admired him. If you're a fan, you may want to send him well wishes like I did before he succums to that dreaded disease.
