    very simple answer:

The Raiders are looking to develop their young receivers and are looking towards the future.

Jerry Rice is useful only on teams that want to win right now (Seahawks, Patriots, etc) and need a good, clutch possession receiver.

Raiders need WRs that will be playing 3-4 years from now, and they have to allow the young ones the chance to make mistakes in this rebuilding year.

Raiders will be going nowhere this year, and next year -- they will need 3+ years to get a team good enough to get back to the Super Bowl

That's why Rice wasn't used at all.

    very simple answer:

The Raiders are looking to develop their young receivers and are looking towards the future.

*How much better of an opportunity is there to develope your young receivers then to have the greatest receiver of all time teaching them. You just got to throw him the ball a few times to make him happy(Not to throw him the ball at all is just down right stupid) Especially when he wants to play for you, loves the city and was your best receiver*

Jerry Rice is useful only on teams that want to win right now (Seahawks, Patriots, etc) and need a good, clutch possession receiver.

*If your an NFL team and you take the field and you do not want to win NOW then you are disgrace to pro sports and yourselves. Professionals are competitive and get paid to try an win. I think you would be hard pressed to find someone in the Raiders organization that does not want to win NOW. Thats the entire point of playing.

Raiders need WRs that will be playing 3-4 years from now, and they have to allow the young ones the chance to make mistakes in this rebuilding year.

*Jerry Rice has not said one word about retiring and is still in the exact same shape as last year when he played and led the team in receptions. Why could he not play 3 more years and be productive?*

Raiders will be going nowhere this year, and next year -- they will need 3+ years to get a team good enough to get back to the Super Bowl

The raiders could have all the talent in the world like a few years ago and still go nowhere. EVERY YEAR THEY ARE DISSAPOINTMENT (for like 5 years straight now) That is probably because they make garbage decisions like this one. They wont win in the future either*

That's why Rice wasn't used at all.

*I do not think it this simple*

First of all, RIce wasn't about to play teacher and mentor, all the while not having 1 pass thrown his way.

He went almost 19 years catching at least 1 pass in every game; then he has 3 of the 4 games where he doesn't catch a pass?

Second, the Raiders know they're not making the playoffs this year. Do you really think they have a chance?

Yes, every team wants to win now. But, the Raiders have made every indication that they are looking towards the future (and not this year).

Would you like to bet on whether or not the Raiders make the playoffs this year? If so, what are you willing to put up (cards? cash?)

Third, I am one of the biggest Jerry Rice fans on this board. Anyone who's been on SCF for awhile knows this. I would LOVE nothing better than to see Rice keep playing until 50.

The more he plays, the more he extends his stats, so that Randy Moss will never have a chance to catch up. Right now, Moss's first 7 years are statistically BETTER than Jerry Rice's first 7 years.

So, yes, it is indeed that simple:

The Raiders know their chances of winning this year is slim and none. They know they must rebuild.

And Jerry Rice didn't figure in their rebuidling state - that's why they didn't throw 1 single pass to him in the last 2 games.

I am happy to see Rice move on ---- i want to see him get into the playoffs and extend those post season stats
