If you really want to...go ahead. However, if I had that RC I would not get it autoed. It from a tough set to collect. There are only a limited number of those cards left. It is up to you, but as a collector of vintage cards I would not do anything to change that card from it present shape. Instead, I would advise getting his picture with the RC and ask him to sign the picture if you had the facilities available.
Just my opinion...as I say I am a vintage collector and a bit of a purist when it comes to keeping these cards in original as possible condition.

No way would I get it signed. That is one of "THE" caards to own and it should be left in it's purest form in my opinion. But it is your card and you can do as you like with it.
As andrew said it would be cool to get the pic signed if you can.
All that being said. Congrats on a huge pickup

I agree with the last 2 comments. In my opinion it would ruin a beautiful card and a piece of history.

If that's what your really really want for your collection, it's your call.
Saying that.... not in a million years sums up what I think. So many other items that would look great signed, don't get it done on a vintage gem like that.

I would not do it. Get some new insert of Howe instead. BTW, congrats on getting the card.

At the Vancouver show last month I cracked Phil Esposito, Marcel Dionne and Bryan Trottier rookie cards out of their PSA holders to get them autographed in person. I love them now more than I did before.
If you plan on keeping it till you die, how will you enjoy it more? Also think about how many auto'd versions there are versus non-auto'd. And lastly, consider that Gordie is getting old so the auto'd population will become finite in a few years.
I am biased though; here is a link to my Autographed Rookie Card Collection. Would love to add an auto'd Howe one day.
I apologize for the morbid nature of some of the above comments.

If it's in 4-5 shape out of 10, I'd say its yours, do what makes you happy. I have a couple 5 cent cards signed in person that I really like and probably won't trade ever. Over the years I've got a jersey, stick, puck, program and several cards signed along with finishing the Lettermarks nameplate. I have enough autos though and wouldn't deface a RC.
